...posting on behalf of one of my friends 
he is looking to buy a 1.9 gti, he's been offered one for around £800...pretty good condition overall but has a very lumpy idle when started (almost sounds like a misfire?), and ticks over circa 1900rpm when warmed up it seems to run fine when on the move; any idea if this is a known issue\easy fix?
better still anyone got a decent 1.9 for sale?

Sounds like a typical AFM (air flow meter) problem. Could also be an air leak (induction side).
If its the AFM they can be retracked DIY or its easy enough to fit a new one DIY. They are a bit pricey new though.
Have a look on www.forums.205gtidrivers.com Theres a guide on retracking and other stuff.
BTW 1.9 is not miles ahead of latter 1.6 cars (which make 115bhp on normal unleaded).
I may part with my 1.6 for £1,100

You can have my 1.9 for £6k
They do have a lumpy ish idle in std trim, but as Jonny says probably AFM at fault.
Check the rear beam as well, not for the idle issue, just a general check.

Yeh I would say AFM, its probably full of gunk. My old one did the same use to have to clean it out from time to time. Dont have the problems any more with my Webers.
As Dreamweaver said check the rear beam, most 205's are getting to the age where they start to seize or get a bit stiff. Recon jobbies arent cheap

It maybe somthing else as well but they have very high lift cams as standard and this was one of the reasons they made good power back in the day!!
if the cams have been changed for even bigger ones this may be why the idle is so bad and has to tick over at 1900 when warm!!

Mine ticks over at 1900.
trails - will have to bring mine along to a ESC meet... I'm thinking the next rr day after I've had some work done.

Cheers. It did have buckets in and was stripped out with extinguisher etc, but it was too harsh to use on the road, and as I realised I wouldn't get much chance to do more than 1 trackday a year I put the original black leather interior back in.
So its going to be a nice fast road car now, with updated interior bits etc. Its cost me £8k to build though and i've only done 300 miles since I finished it last May, just dont get time to use it

I know what your saying about not using the car enough....
I have spent a boat load of money on my RA & only covered 3k in nearly 3yrs.
Have been thinking of selling it, but I cannot get my head around loosing so much money.

The std seats were about 4 times heavier than the buckets, bucket could be lifted with one hand, the leather seats need 2 hands per seat just to move them in/out of the car
Back seats also weighed a ton so there was quite a weight saving to be had, but the buckets were low down which made the driving experience a lot different as the wheel was higher up. As Gary says, it was also a lot louder with no rear seats, and the car was much bumpier.
Its a nicer place to be now with std seats.
If I was doing it all again as a track car I would buy a decent std 1.9 and just strip it down to nothing inside, plus swiss cheese it all over. I'd keep the 8v engine for cheapness and spend on suspension.
I have £1k worth of suspension sat behind me from Skip Brown which still needs fitting - I imagine that will change the car once again. It better had do, cos thats it now for spending on the damn thing

Used to love my 1.6 GTI - the only car I ever regret selling. Makes me want to get another one for track days too!

i think Dan will be keeping the full interior as its going to be his only car (not daily as he has a trannie), so comfort will deffo be a considration...thanks again gents, lots of useful info and advice

Dan here...just hijacked Ian's log in to say Ta for the info. fitting a new cam belt and full oil change tomorrow, looking at the the electric choke thingy as well to try and sort the lumpy cold idle.
