S-tronic is a gearbox, quattro is haldex 4wd. Get both, (or dont they do both in A3's?)

S-tronic gearbox is great, but the haldex will keep you from spining the front tyres, if your more of a motorway man Id get the S-tronic

Didn't like the Stronic, will go manual with quattro. 3 door looks better than 5 door so may go 3 door even with 2 kids as most of the time it is just me. We have a 5 door 54 plate Golf as well for family use.

Nice choice, S-tronic didn't push my buttons either.

Spent all day with a mate in a 2.0T S-Line Quattro manual yesterday.

25k car we were in - the biggest overpriced POS I've been in for a long time.

Not particularly quick, though free'd up through the day (only had 300 miles on it to start with and 1k by the end!). Its not bad at all on A roads, but thoroughly tiring on the motorway, such a horrible choppy ride, the damping is awful. The 4wd is utterly pointless, we turned off the ESP, dialed in 5k rpm and sidestepped the clutch - it bogged down and went nowhere

Gawd knows who would by one over a Golf GTi (which is far cheaper) but whoever does is a fool!

3 or 5 door? I'm thinking about the Diesel and as we already have a Golf GT TDi, two would be daft!!

If you do a lot of miles, then a diesel would make sence. Also since the Quattro on the A3 is a halex, it basically FWD most of the time until it experiences slip. If you decide to tune it, the AWD will be able to handle the power increase better than the FWD version, especially if its a diesel.

I don't do massive miles, generally around average per year, however I use my wife's Golf Diesel when I am working away (and the commute is not by train), she hates the Sti so I have agreed to get rid and get something more suitable for me. I get 40p a mile but obviously make a lot more if I get good mpg. The S3 looks nice and claims 31mpg but I'm not sure whether that is right. After all the Sti claims 25!!

This one was the 3 door. Have to say though that the seats were reasonable comfy - had leather, not sure if thats an option but considering the vanity mirror light is I'd imagine so!

Dunno but the Golf is out as we have one already - two on the drive would be a bit odd!!

Leather is an option, £750. I had a quote through CSMA for the following:

A3 SLine 170 Manual Quattro
Audi Exclusive Nappa Leather
Multi function Wheel
Front armrest
Rear armrest
Ipod connection
Bose
Non Smoking pack (nco)
14 spoke 18" alloys (nco)
Xenons
Pearl paint
Elec folding mirrors
Auto Wipers

£25130 as opposed to £27895 list

Will probably drop the Exclusive leather and go with the standard stuff and save myself £750.

You say you don't want another Golf, however, since the A3 is based on the Golf, you are effectively getting another Golf with a differnet bodyshell.

Yes, but don't want two similar looking cars on the drive However if the missus didn't have a Golf, that is what I would probably buy.

Matt,

What else have you test driven?

I was in a similar position - drove the Audi, didn't rate it - damping and steering terrible. Its also expensive.

Bought a 120D Sport in the end. A much better drive, fantastic steering and quicker than the Audi. New 120Ds will have 170 ps to match the VAG lump.

Beemer has a much wider power band as well compared to the VAG engines.

120D M Sport specced as above is £25,920 before discount

Just a though

I just can't get on with the looks though, it's definitely a love it or loathe it style. Price is good, CSMA show £20598 for the basic M Sport.

Did you try the Sline? I thought it felt the same as the wife's Golf, the steering can feel a little detached, but then coming from a Subaru I understand it's not going to be point and squirt so to speak.

No, and there wasn't a 170 version when I tested it, although I've driven one since and my opinion hasn't changed.

The 1 series is just so much better to drive than the A3. At any speed. The sport is hard suspension wise, but the springs and dampers are very well matched and its not unbearable by any means. M sport is even better and, strangely, a little more compliant.

I used to hate the looks as well, but its better in the flesh, and you come to appreciate the details as you live with it. It has grown on me and I actually prefer it now, especially since Audi went with the gaping mouth look.

In profile, the deeply sculpted sides reflect the light with stunning effect and the build quality is right up there with Audi.

Pictures don't do it justice. Have a go in one, you never know

You don't get to see much of the exterior when you're enjoying the drive, the involvement and the handling in the 1 series.

Horses for courses

I'd be interested to know why though.

I'll ask, I know one reason was the visibility out of the back. Wasn't that interested as I had discounted it.

Its a BMW, why does he need to see what is behind him?

Joking!

Never found it a problem myself, and there's always the parking sensors.

I think it was more to do with watching for the old bill on slip roads and such like
