Anyone own/owned one of these? I am thinking of one as a toy wondered what the real life experience is/was like.

Probably a second mortgage when they go wrong. I have never owned one, but a car of that age is unlikely to have had one careful owner. Why not go for something small that you can hurl around at lower speeds while still getting that sensation of speed. We have an MGTF that is fantastic fun for that very reason. Or you could buy a 1000bhp Skyline...probably an easier car to win a "mine's bigger than yours" competition in the pub

For a trackday toy, I believe the R32 is the one to have. Weighs the least and is apparently a very nice bit of kit to have. Whats your budget?

As a track car I would have a Caterham or Westfield with a straight forward 2.0 litre engine. As a GTR 32 is car cracking car but a one hell of a money pit everything is in limited numbers such as engines etc compared to subarus so prices are high on parts. But all depends on your budget.

When I had my R34 Vspec, it was just too easy to modify and create stupid bhp BUT with big costs at the higher end. Also, living in Aberdeen, the nearest specialist was RB Motorsport near Wigan! I would go for something lighter and more "basic" such as Caterham/Westfield (unless you want to mimic me in buying a 360 Modena as a toy in December!

Its all relative to be honest, they dont go wrong any more than a Scoob would do if not properly maintained, if you cant afford to run and maintain a scoob, theres no point looking at a Skyline. As you mention its going to be a toy Im assuming you can afford it. Buy a cheap one and expect it to have issues though.

I suggest you pop over here GTROC but a wee word or warning, before you post to ask a question, use the search function then ask... they can be a fussy bunch (but I've found them all very helpful and friendly)

Hi Guys, should have made a few thing clear firstly,due to my size 20 stone plus (waits for those comments), I just dont fit the Cater/field kit car route anymore, I have a bike for pure adreniline rush, A Porsche for most uses, diesel for everyday use and just sold my 387bhp scoob which was my previous toy. The reason I am looking at others than the scoob/evo route I have had a few already, liked them all(well most). I would want to spent around £6-£8 buying and maybe another £4ish modding, The Skylines are mostly ugly (R34GTR's are out of my price range for a toy) and the R32 has the purest lines/lightest weight(I need all the help I can get). Hope this helps.

Incidentally, with your budget (purchase & modding) you'll easily get an R32 GT-R thats already been properly seen to (prob circa 4-600bhp) and in good condidion.

I have an R32.

All I will say is, have the car checked thoroughly and go in with your eyes wide open.
I drive it very often, its a very capable car but you need to get above 4000 rpm to really appreciate what she can do.
Very easy to live with as an everyday driver [fuel consumption is bad lol].

cheers guys,I have looked on gtroc, seems a massive variation on prices condition etc. Also beauty is in the eye etc. ps. my scoob once did full tank of fuel (£60ish) in 67 miles(but what miles they were ). I am looking at the moment and as is always the case the few I have been to see have been poorly described "its mint mate" or power claims cannot be real, the main mods will be on uprating brakes/suspension as any car of this age will benefit from a little fettle, Power/reliability are reasonably easy to achieve i believe?

looked at PH Aussie one, looks fantastic and sound like he knows what he is talking about in mods but price? I think I can get 75/80% of that for less than 50% of the price. (well hope to at least).

Well, its only an askin price, you could always make him an offer. There arent that many around that are in that condition with all those mods on and the mileage.

Yeah, been to a couple of jap.auction sites and prices are fantastic but when I brought my Evo6 in we had loads of probs,damage in transit/delays/paperwork snafu's and in the end (6 months later) we had a car that was no cheaper than I could have bought one more locally. I know there is no SVA requirements on this age of car but after the 6 experience I would really like to see/drive my potential purchase. The evo was a cat 5 condition car (v.good) when it left Japan, then the active yaw packed in within 600 miles of driving (low fluid caused by burst seal). Someone else can have the teething probs.

they seem to have a good selection of skylines most of the time and i beleive they have a good reputation
not sure how much you want to spend though

Go for it !!!!

I owned a r32 for ages and i worked it out over the course of ownership and it was actually cheaper than the Scooby !!!!!

Go for a mildly tuned one for around the 6-7 k mark and then you can improve on the base car you have bought. Also the 32 is generally known for being the strongest base car anyway and with a few simple tweaks can run 450 bhp all day long !!! Also the 32 is only a little more heavy than the Scooby so the driving expierence is ery similar but you have so much more extra power to use. And the fact that is has very little in the way of electronic gimics makes it an awesome track car too, so easy to drive on the edge all the time.

Just buy from someone who knows there stuff and do the simple checks that you would do to any car you bought, when you go look at one turn the engine on and let it sit for a min then hold the rpm at 4000 whilst looking at the oil pressure gauge, if it does not go above 4 bar then walk away as there is a problem !

Yep, get one!

I've owned one and have very fond memories of it. Loved most things about it..

sounded awesome (especially when you backed off)
went well (I had ecu, decat, exhaust, filters etc)
loved the look (menacingly low on deep dish jap rims)
one of (if not) the best driving positions.

Only thing I didn't like was the rear wheel steerings tendancy to feel a bit strange over uneven undulating roads. Also on one occasion it felt like the resr steering moved on a fast sweeping curve in the motorway in the wet.

An R33 v-spec feels a totally different car to drive I know that much! The R32 feels like a RWD car in comparrison.

If you test one make sure you give it a good rev, they are superb the higher they go. Totally different drive to an evo or scooby, marvell as it stomps on over 100mph

When they go wrong it gets expensive... would'nt touch one EVER again.

Having said that ... always wanted one.. got that out of my system now.... thank ****.. lol

Usually I guess 'cos they might be significantly tuned or modded??? Standard, or sensibly tuned Skylines are no worse than any other "performance" car IMHO... But, they are a "commitment", like most other enthusiast cars....

a friend has a 200sx tuned to 270 bhp recorded on a club rr day using standard clutch and ecu. a dawes device, an apex exhaust which is bleeding loud and bangs when changing gear.also has skyline wheels fitted
the point is it looks the part sounds the part and goes well. think its worth 4k

i asked him why not get a skyline and he says "well the amount of muppets that point at his car anyway and say look a skyline!! also says when a skyline breaks it very expensive and that hes heard of ppl buying skylines off the jap import dealerships then the engines let go within a couple of weeks."

his is one of the L8 ones with the boot last time i spoke he was taking the rear spoiler off to make it look more JDM.

Pretty old now... even the low milers with at least some paperwork have seen some action.. I some cases 17-18 years old now.. nope never again unless I have the money for a 2.8 forged bottom end, T88 & a nice 6 speed box even then better options now - too much risk but as you say "commitment".. yes when a forged crank comes in at 7k.. you would have to be!

Been out in a proven 743 bhp example... can honestly say the fastest and most exciting drive in my life - own one - no chance

Had an S14 - very nice package for the money, well used to be getting pricey now. Great package and pretty cheap to go Stage 2 - around the 270 mark - Stage 3 pushing things I reckon with the GT28rs but find a goodun and you'll have a rock solid investment.

Was lucky enough to own an R32 over the summer, i love scoobs but has to be said (imo) the skyline was a different league (a league above).

Downsides? AWFUL fuel consumption, also it did feel a bit old and rough round the edges....it was a 1991 model and I was quite para about it going bang.

Really enjoyed owning it, wouldn't have sold if not for uncertain job situation, and will deffo own another.

Go for it fella, an R32 has been on my wishlist since they first came out, they are the 'proper' GT-R in my opinion. They were an homologation special aimed at cleaning up in touring car racing during the period RS500s ruled the roost, and clean up they did, to the point where the Aussies (sore losers, as ever) banned them completely

R33s lost the plot, styling and weight wise and R34s are for the playstation generation - too many gadgets IMO of course
