Hiya Mate,

Not got one yet, but I have left my old job now, with new one starting in a week or so I have a week of faster car hunting... Anyway yesterday I had a very quick blast in a Supra Twin Turbo. This one was by no means standard (350+ BHP) and very mean looking with loads of Toyota Racing parts. But I would have no chance of keeping a it on the road in the dry!!!

Which means Skyline all the way I think... But any other suggestions welcome (must be at least 2+2 and be under £18k, also require more power than a scooby so at least 350bhp!)

Skyline is the way I want to go, but the supra was amazing, and the insurance cost is amazingly half that of a skyline (honestly, seems crazy, £700 to insure, bargin!!!) so I thought I'd try one for size, that and my mate was keen to have me say yes it was much faster than my Scooby (150 mph achieved at under 5k revs!).

Anyway there are no R33 GTR's for sale in or around Bristol/Swindon at the moment, so I haven't had a chance to drive one yet, one of the local importers has one on a boat at the moment, but I wouldn't buy it from him (a mate has had loads of problems with them!)

btw There is an R34 owner on here too (username - W9GTR I think)...

Cheers for the help

What are the general running costs compared to a scoob, ie servicing, insurance. Do you know if they have any reliability issues? (The chocolate engines in scoobs have put me off buying another! - in fact last time I saw my scoob at the garage last week it had no engine at all! )
I'm thinking of buying one next spring - that's be when my new house complete with nice big garage will be completed!

Polarbearit
Funnily enough, I am also considering a supra turbo, my other half prefers them to the skyline, and hey, anything for a quiet life!

No more scoobs for me, too fragile, and they're everywhere! Still love the noise though!

Spudgun mate - I'll be collecting my spanking new Bayside Blue R34 GTR V-Spec any day now ( I went up to Middlehurst yesterday to drool over it)

Bye bye Scooby !

Obviously the Impreza MY01 was no-go (due to it being fugly). I considered an Evo7 but they're only available as import and I'm fond of manufacturers warranty (plus wanted something a little more special)..

So.. I went for one of the 80 UK cars (of which there were 3-4 unregistered still available, as Nissan has drip-fed them into the UK)

As Steve Steater (W9 GTR) will confirm, I got a pretty stonking deal on it too.

Once the first service is over, it's going back for the 400bhp upgrade.. then once my bank balance has recovered, it's going back for the 500bhp..

You'll see me posting on the GTR BBS as Geezajob.

Mail me offline if you want a natter by E-mail.

What fatuous pub-talk rubbish

This topic has been done to death, but the educated view is that overtaking someone on atrackday means nothing. It's not a race. You don't know if the guy was trying hard, how experienced he was, whether he was on a warm up/cool down lap, etc. etc.

I have every respect for anyone "taking it easy" in a car that costs the same as a house.

I remember a track day a while back, when Steve Streater took his R34 Skyline out for the first time, boy was he nervous.. Practically everyone passed him, but thumbs up to him for building up his confidence bit by bit, rather than driving like a **** and stuffing it. Arron went out later in Steve's car and pissed over everyone.. go figure.

But as you say, you've not driven one..

Yummmmm!

Not ar$ed about whether it can be beaten by a bloody morris minor when it looks that good.

One question - you want a UK official import because of the warranty, but won't the power upgrades blow that? Or are they kind of like a PPP?

And just so we all feel sick, what was the deal you got?

Bagsy a go in the passenger seat at the next Donno!!

Cool

leigh (cool name )
i can only speak as someone new to r33 ownership.
my initial thoughts? its everything i ever imagined. even the name of it gets me drooling
running costs? petrol about the same as a scooby in my own experience.
insurance. costs me 1200 pounds per year with tescos. you will need a tracker device.
downsides? its bigger and heavier than a lot of cars, and not as nimble through tight twisty bits as a scooby or evo. parking though, bizarrely, i find easier than in a scooby.
good points? its mod city everything can be done just about. bored with 600bhp? then go for the mega single turbo and enjoy potential 1000bhp
my car is currnetly approx 400bhp. the first week of september shes getting some big work done to the turbo, changing over to steel turbos, extensions, cams, head porting etc.etc.
she should be somewhere near 600bhp, definately 600bhp plus when we get the new ecu and 550cc injectors.plus she will run reliably.
skylines are a dream to drive, comfortable, exciting, good looking. and people leave you alone

so how much for all this?
car cost 15k.
mods 6.5k
optional respray ( shes a bit tatty looking) 2k

grand total of 23.5k. that doesnt even get you a uk300. ask a chick what a uk300 is and she probably thinks its a quiz show. ask her what a skyline is and i guarentee smelly fingers

as for supras? heard good things about em, but it has to be the manual version. always a big page of em in top marques. dont know if the veilside ones look a little OTT though?

hopefully ive got people thinking

Cool

Had an R32 GTR. Loved it. Had about 370hp but was nowhere near as fast as the 3dr Sierra I have now that runs 330hp.

Mind you, I say that but the car is at SCS having a 400+hp mapped and dynoed engine being built since I had a head gasket failure after a tyre wall got in the way at Combe and the fact that the head hadn't been skimmed before going back on.

Having now done a lot of miles in a UK 97MY, the R32 and now the Sierra I can safely say that the R32 was the nicest very closely followed by the Scooby. However the Sierra is awesome and nothing beats it for value

Just wish I could afford another Scooby for everyday as the Sierra is very raw!

This is the supra I met earlier in the week
(photo taken before it came to the UK and was tidied up)

I think I would be off the road quite often, the owner has already had had one moment in the first few days of ownership! It would appear that Supras are just as tuneable as Skylines, and the laydees love them just as much!

Anyway as will have to use the car in the rain etc it has to be a skyline! Big power RWD and poor traction control make the supra to lethal for me.

nice looking car. does the fella who owns it have a medallion and chest wig
needs better/bigger wheels too.
600bhp with only rwd? i wouldnt fancy that much, especially on icy days.
perhaps the r33 combines the best of both worlds. good looks, massive bhp potential, yet safe and reliable. and these days, affordable.
mine was got out of top marques, give people a bell, you never know
i would be happy to let u have a go, but essex is a bit far for a test drive i think.
looking at the latest top marques, there seem to be a few r33's in there, though i dont know their location.
i will help in any way i can in the meantime

Six years ago, I used to have an R32 GT-R (440bhp, APs, steel T)

One of the best cars I've owned and huge fun to drive - flames
between full throttle gear changes and over-run were nice too
One of the rear wheels is still sitting in my flat - the state of
the tyre is good reminder of how much fun I used to have in it.

Very fond memories of it and would have another anytime - in
fact if I keep writing about it here I'll end up buying another
very soon - I'm off

Middlehursts is a great garage BTW.

David I really am getting to like you
Youre car looks the nuts . Bit like me old mates really
Get the same spec as Steve`s straight away if you can as it is a bit tame in standard trim.
I keep trying to pursuade him to go for the big one but it is a lot of dosh. I think he is getting the brakes sorted first and then if he gets a chance to drive one with big power then maybe he will go with it.
We`ll just have to see.
If you get it done then he`ll have to

Blimey
I'm famous ...or is it me car
Thanks Gervias (I will continue to call u that till u actually pick the car up )
My first venture on to the track in my three bed semi on steroids was to be frank.... scary. There is much pub bull**** banter spouted on 'ere about how people have blown cars away on the track, but that doesn't take into account driver ability/confidence. I could have been passed by me mam in her punto sporting in the morning, but by afternoon I was making fairly quick progress, confident that I was not stretching the cars ability with my conservative driving style. 18 months down the line pah! don't give a ****e I'll chuck it in stamp on the throttle and look out of the side window to see which way I'm going
If you want an honest measured opinion about P1 vs Skyline in track situation ask Birdy. My only problem at the moment is I've got warped brake discs (thanks to birdy) which don't inspire confidence, but I have ordered 6 pot AP's to be fitted in about three weeks time
Bring on the next track day....only someone please shoot the marshalls before I stick the black flag up their......

Cheers

They won't let me upgrade it until it's had it's first service, so it's a case of quickly putting on 1000 miles and then back it goes for a week..

Amazing car is all I can say.......Love to own a yellow on. No jokes about taste please...

Seriously though, if you own a Skyline and live in the South, where do you go for servicing? If its one of the 80 offical cars it would be a pain to keep going back to Middlehurst in the North for the warranty to be maintained.

Anyone have the answer?

Cheers David.....that is customer satifaction

I've always wandered about Skyline ownership and its servicing as I used to own a few TVR's in the past.

Does the car go for a few days and what kind of cost does this incur?

TVR used to be approx £600 a service and £100 extra for a pick up within 50 miles.

Cheers

that bayside blue colour is gorgeous. saw one about a fortnight ago on the a12, being 'escorted' by a pulsar. i honked and waved as i flew past, big waves and smiles all round r34 looked the BIZ!!
incidentally, any probs with r34 paintwork? i only ask as there seems to be a lot of grief on here about scooby paintwork, and i wondered if it were all jap cars, or just scoobys. my girlfriend has an evo, no chips or marks at all, and its 2 years old.

Am I the only person I know to feel messed about by Middlehurst?
Drove all the way from London to Liverpool to see an R34 which turned out to be a total waste of time and effort.
Standing around like a muppet for an hour as they only had one guy to deal with Skylines and he was busy with another customer.
When I'm back working again if I do decide on a Skyline I think I'd prefer to get one of the new "M" Spec versions imported from Japan.
Leather comes as standard as does a slightly softer ride.

Bajie, did you make an appointment to see a salesman at Middlehurst ?

If so, then it's pretty poor that you had to wait so long to be seen.. If you turned up "on spec" then you takes yer chances.

As there are only 80 UK cars, it's not like they're inundated with sales calls - so maybe you just got unlucky.

Note, Leather comes as standard anyway on UK cars, and the softer ride of the M-spec is considered a compromise and a bit wussy.

I used to drive from Glasgow to St Helens to have my car
maintained by Middlehursts. Then I would either borrow a car
from them or get the train back. Obviously, I then had to
repeat this process in reverse to collect the car.

Other owners were doing this from Aberdeen - a 700 mile round
trip!

A bit of a hassle to say the least but the car was worth it.
