Cool MK2 Golf VR6

Saw a mint MK2 golf with a VR6 lump in it yesterday.
Anyone else come accross any other conversions like this?
I have owned a MK2 Golf GTi 8v - Great Car
I have owned a MK3 VR6 - Bad Car (Engine was good though)
But never seen the two combined. Must be a real handfull I would think?

Before the 1.8T engine came out it was quite a popular conversion, usually utilising the 190bhp 2.9 from the Corrado. I believe it's pretty straightforward as engine transplants go, as the front chassis of a 'rado is pretty much a straight lift from the Mk2.

You're quite right btw, the Mk3 was a piece of ****, I think I can say without fear of contradiction, that to date, the Mk2 was definitely the high point of the golf's career

Nice, I used to have a black 8 valve, absolute PITA to keep looking clean Oak Green is so much more forgiving in that respect

I had a red 5 door Mk 2 8V with the "P" alloys. Great car. Went even better when I put a nice Kent cam in it . Replaced the headlamp loom with a BR Motorsport uprated one and fitted a couple of Cibie Oscar + driving lamps with 100w bulbs. Night to day was never in it

It was replaced by a Mk 2 Jetta GTI 16V. Rapid beastie with a huge boot. Touched an indicated 140 on the way to hospital when SWMBO went into labour suddenly

Making me want another, if you got a good one they just felt right, had mark 1's and they were fantastic but the mk2 was a way better day to day proposition.

When I said about getting very old, I meant the car not me !

Definitely a pain to keep clean.

I have had 7 Golf GTI's

MK1 1600, first fast car, always have a soft spot for it
MK1 1900 GTI engineering, fast but a bit ratty.
White MK2 16 valve, bit smoky, lowered to much but went well
Red 5 door, wobbly shell, leaked water, engine was fantastic
Black Mk2 you see above, the prize car, great but had started to rot under the plastics, replaced front wings, welded back ones, screen surround started to rust so sold it, would have kept it if I had the space and it wasnt rotting away, they werent immune.

MK3 GTI, pants, ok as a car but not a GTI, bought new and a massive dissapointment.

My old Mk2 which I sold, because I'm stupid

VR6 lump in a Mk2 makes it very nose heavy, well on the ring it does anyway, the quickest Mk2's on the ring have 16v 2l Astra engines in them

Driving at 140 mph in a VW Jetta would be enough to put anyone in labour

I have to say I'm a Golf fan, but funnily enough I don't like the Mk1, Mk3 or Mk5!

I've always been a fan of the Mk2's and hopefully get another as a track car.

As for the Mk4, the TDI was really the car for me!

i used to have a late model mk2 8valve gti, did a few mods to the shock and a scorpion exhaust and a k&n induction kit.

it was a cracking car to drive especially with the momo wheel. sometimes really wish i didnt sell it.

been in a mk2 vr6 but never driven one, the engine made a hell of a difference though.

Right about the Mk2 being the pinnacle of Golfs. Ive had 2, one black J plate 8v 3 door and a H reg G60 rallye. The G60 was a great car when I'd had a couple of things done.....165bhp and 4wd isnt a great combo for performance but it handled like it was on rails.

A mark 2 with a vr6 lump in it will be a very good drive...light weight frame with a good powerful lump in it. As long as the brakes and suspension have been uprated it should be very good. Take it for a test drive and see how it feels.

I own a mark 3 vr6 and agree as standard the suspension is sh*t. I immediately uprated this ...it now sits lower (as it should have from the factory) and goes round bends like a go cart and is still comfortable. The later vr6's (N reg onwards) had around 185bhp from the factory as opposed to the earlier ones which had 174 bhp. Maybe worth finding out which lump it has in it mate. I've tuned my car to just shy of 210bhp and it pulls very well. Not as focused or anywhere near as fast as an import classic shape.. but has better performance than civic type r's etc and the sound of the v6 is amazing. Does me fine as a daily driver and very reliable, until I eventually get my impreza!

The mark 3 golf gti's don't have the performance they should have though compared to the earlier marques.

Drove the Mk4 V6 4motion. Quite Rapid....thats it. A dissapointment compared to a good classic scoob or a MK2 Golf.

The 8v was my fav.

Getting nostaglic for my MK2 now reading this post...wish I had never started it LOL

About the Mk2“s handling. I felt it was the most sublime FWD car when it oversteared that I have driven. So on a wide roundabout or on track when you induced overstear ...just brings a grin to the face. I felt its weakness was in an understear situation. So spirted driving down twisty road feeding power on through the fronts at the apex onwards it seemed to lighten up far too much on the front and you felt that in a big understear situation you wern“t going to sort it out. I never felt I could quite drive it at the limits of its grip when I started to induce understear(on the road). This negative aspect was countered by its great behaviour when the backend went. So always felt it was a bit of better track car than a road car.
Please feel free to disagree

And the Mk2 build quality was top notch..... they dont build golf“s like that any more
