Fun but without the running costs?
Anything with 4wd grip is going to have running costs.
But if its fun your after for less than 5k...Teg R, Clio Williams, 306 GTi-6/Rallye, early MX5 S1 (with turbo/S'c conversion) 200SX, etc.

Depends what aspect you most liked about the scoob as to what might suit you in the new car.
I've got a MK2 MX5 and can honestly say that it gives me more of a grin than my old Legacy Turbo in terms of handling (I can play with the back end of the MX without getting scared!) but even with a few mods - not FI - it's nowhere near as fast. Have been in a SC'd MK1 and it was rapid.
If you want grunt, 200SX (cheap mods get the power up) but with the power comes running costs.
I'd be tempted by a 'Teg R, you get the handling, reliability and power (albeit in a narrow band) - plus you can potter around town and still get 30+mpg.
Notice that I'm staying jap and not going for the French options - even if my old ZX Volcane was v.reliable!

By no means is a 200 sx cheap to run, i sold mine 10 months ago as it was begining to go wrong and cost me £'s (m plate with FSH)so i bought a Williams clio which was great for 6 months and suddenly that needed work doing to it and cost me loads to put right as genuine parts are expensive but superior.
Dont get me wrong both great cars but expensive to run im still paying off my credit car bil!! lol

Either a 323 gtx or gtr AWD, 1990 - 1994 not the uk version. I've run both and would say they're were fairly inexpensive to run and great fun as they had a rear wheel bias. I think it was a 35 / 65 front real split. You'd be looing at about £2k - 5K for a mint GTR but they're well worth the money
Next I'd say pulsar GTiR. Again I've run one of these for a few years and bar brakes, oil changes & servicing this was again fairly inexpensive to maintain. Really quick too! Going to cost a few £££$$$ if the clutch needs doing so make sure its been done. From £2.5k up to £6k for a minter.
Ditto on the MX5 Turbo. Whilst my Sccob is away I've been looking into this though I don't think I can get past the gay factor.

I get 22mpg min and anything up to 30mpg.
As long as you are vaguely mechanically minded, and can do oil changes yourself they are bulletproof (if previously looked after) and cheap to run for what you get!!!
Suppose it depends on insurance costs too, but I'm currently insuring the modded SX, a 205 1.9 GTI and my ZX6R for less than I was paying to insure my old Skyline GTR.................

Well i bought my M reg 200 sx FSH with 70k on it and discovered that it developed a engine fault and comptression test showed that 1 cylinder was ultra low and needed a rebuild, also needed various stuff to get thru the mot so i just decided to sell it and lost £400 in 10months....
I just would be careful buying a turbo charged car if your worried about running costs.

ITR DC2 , biggest grin factor of any car I've owned .
Cheap to run , bullet proof engines and transmission, fantastic handling and a soundtrack to die for.
You can pick up a great example nowadays for about 5k, thinking about getting another for the weekends now that I've swapped my scooby for the legacy. Take one for a spin , you will be hooked. Its the only car that I have really regretted selling.
