Default Help, buying a used car untaxed.

Hello guys, can anyone help.

I just bought a car and the tax has just run out.

I've arranged to go and pick it up friday, but I just found out that the insurer that gave me the cheapest quote (quinn) can't get the form to me before next week, so I'll not be able to tax it and I've gotta pick it up this weekend.

Is it true you can drive legally without tax if you're goign to get an MOT, if it's booked.

Thing is the car is 200 miles away from where I live, is it only valid to the nearest MOT station or to the nearest to your home!?

Bit risky to drive 200 miles with not tax, as insurance not valid! :S

You are not making a great deal of sense. Driving a vehicle without tax is no big deal as you will be given the opportunity to pay back tax from when the last disc expired before facing any other sort of fine. It does not void your insurance.

I can't make out whether the car is MOT'd or not. If it isn't you can only drive it for a pre-arranged test. Driving it 200 miles to a local one should not present a major problem unless its a deathtrap (as its where you live and local to you) but why not get it MOT'd by the current keeper before you pick it up?

Most insurers can fax a covernote in under an hour to any garage, so I don't understand the problem with your insurance

Car only has 2 months MOT left, but the Tax has run out.

I thought you could not buy a tax disc from a post office without insruance cert? Or cover letter. Which I cannot get before the time I have to go and pick up the car.

At the moment it's on private property, and has been untaxed for about a month.

So as it stands it looks as though I'll not be able to pick it up.

But I thought there was a legal loop hole, that if you have a pre-arranged MOT appointment, you can drive a car un-taxed to the MOT centre.

It's a bit tenious, cause the MOT is not out just yet, but I didn't think the law stipulated that.

Is that clearer? :S

The tax and MOT are unrelated. The car is MOT'd and you have insured it. End of. When the cover note comes through just tax it then.

You may as well wait until next week anyway for the start of June otherwise you would lose virtually a months tax anyway.

you are allowed to drive a car to a pre-arranged DoT inspection (SVA or MoT) without needing road tax. Driving halfway across the country may be taking the **** a bit.

Is this still the case if the MOT is not due to expire for 2 months.

It doesn't matter... A time period is not stipulated, just that a test/inspection is booked.

TBH I wouldn't wind yourself up about it.

I would however, check that the car is SORN'd by the current keeper. Just in case of problems later on. Also, when you buy the car, get a receipt or note with the date and his signature on it (assuming private sale and not a trader).
