Question Audi S4

Hi There,

Anyone got any experience of these beasties ?

On paper they have a shed load of power and a resonable 0-60.

What are they like day to day in comparison to an STI ?

cheers

T.

My mates got one and I have a modded wrx at 285 bhp. We have compared speed wise and mine is a bit faster, not much though. Not sure about top end cos I rarely push my car that fast. It is a very luxurious car compared to the STI . It has full leather,tv player, optional sat nav,air con and I think electric seats. So you get the speed and luxury with the stealth look.

They're not a 'sharp' (steering and turn-in) as a scoob but then again, it's quite a different proposition.

Cheers

Running costs are very high and modified cars seem to be prone to turbo failure.
Find an unmodified car with warranty to reduce risks. Never driven one but did look into buying one some time ago and eventually decided against it because of their reputation for providing little fun.

Later ones are a NA 4.2 V8, not turbocharged.

Yes, I just assumed they were talking about the old twin turbo model because they were the ones I looked at. The V8 is far more desireable although still said to be a bit poor handling wise.

No.

The B6 and B7 S4 are both NA 4.2 V8's like the current RS4.

So any S4 after 2002 is NA.

What year audi are you looking at to buy?

B6 4.2 V8

b7 4.2 V8

B5 2.7 BiTurbo

I would love a B6 or B7 S4. Fit a Performance exhaust and drool at the noise. Wouldnt imagine mpg wouldnt be any worse than in a scoob. Hopefully not anyway. Due to weight they wont be as nimble as a scoob but they are totally different cars and once you get inside one you will forget all about your old STI.

I actually prefer the look of the B6 model S4 to the B7.

I prefer the B6 cabriolet to every other A4 apart from the RS4.

Blow me, never knew that. I always thought only the RS4 went to a proper engine. Always thought the S4 was always turbo crap.

The B6 is a beauty, I agree.

Audi Lover - any idea what years I'd be looking at for a B6 S4? You seem to live up to your name!

2002- early 2005.

Pricey though.

Edit.

Only the B6 cabriolets were built in 2005 still. The B7 started production in 2005 for the hardtop.

Aren't they! I just had a look at a couple for sale - £25k for a 2003 avant.

I've got a hankering for an A4 estate but the engine could be anything, tdis included. Need to make my mind up or at least fix the budget a bit more firmly... it's between 10 and 20k at the moment which isn't narrowing my choice much.

you can pick up a audi approved B6 2004 with 45k miles on it for 22k but ive still seen some advertised for 45k. Thats near RS4 money

Audi's do hold their value very well and the B6 cabriolet especially.

Jonathan-

For 20k you could get a 2005 model A4 which comes with the new/updated diesel and petroel engines which are highly regarded.

Yeah, it's definitely on my list and the new ones do look nice. Then I wonder if it would really be that much better than a B5 at half the price... both cars would do what I needed I expect.

Question

I was looking at one less than 12 months old - so it would be a V8 manual.

Its interesting that peeps dont think they are as sharp as the scoob.

Are there any road test reports kicking about ?

When we say less sharp its only because they are heavy old brutes. Id have one over my scoob any day though.

You can pick up a 2002 S4 (4.2 V8) 18k or so now, but running costs are likely to be high- only returns just over 20mpg average...

Handling may not be as good as an M3, but thats not to say its bad. Saying that Ive never driven one - however I might try and blag an extended test drive in one while my A4 is in having some work done under warranty!

There is a big difference in fuel consumption between the B6/B7 4.2 V8 and the 2.7 TT V6 in the B5. My B5 S4 returns 23-28 with 410 BHP and a number of B6/B7 owners I known are lucky to get 21-22. The B7 RS4 is likely to be worse (18 mpg anyone). If you want to discuss the car with some owners then get across to http://www.rs246.com

Fooking hell - just been for test drive in V8 - awesome!

Precise, smooth, refined and V.Fast. with the miltek exhaust sounds like a real animal.

Where do I sign ? Anyone want my MY06 STI ?
