Golf 2.3 V5 or 2.8 V6 4motion?
A friend is looking to buy a Golf, and asked my advice re the above.
I recommended the V6 due to more power and torque, albeit some will be lost through the 4 wheel drive.
The V5 has 170bhp and 166lb/ft as opposed to the V6's 204bhp and 199lb/ft, yet Evo magazine rate the V5 4 stars, and the V6 3 stars
Anyone got any idea which is the better buy and why the V5 gets a better review?

I wouldnt say the V5 is better just because EVO give it one more star. It may be that they thought the V6 was too pricey or something.
A mate has a V6-4motion and its excellent - swift and smooth, and sounds lovely when you cane it. The V5 will of course be slower, but probably cheaper to buy. Boils down to what he can afford I would think.

V5 is 144bhp/tonne and V6 is 148bhp/tonne.
Take into account transmission losses in the 4wd and they are probably pretty similar.
I'd imagine the V6 will be marginally quicker off the line though....

I`ve owned three Mk4 Golfs.....
a 1.8T, a V5 (170bhp) and a 150bhp TDI.
The V5 was the least enjoyable, it just felt very lazy. OK it sounded good but that was about it.
I`d go for a V6 over a V5 any day.

Old man swapped his mk3 gti 16v for a V5 and in his opinion it was a much bettter car. More of a cruiser and could just give it some boot without dropping down.
Fuel mainly around the mid 20's as suggested and his only problem was with the climate control which took vw forever to locate.
Was told by VW that between V5 & V6 there would be that much in it....V6 but just marginal.
Best of luck

I used to have a V6, such a nice car but suspension and 4wd is CRAP and I mean CRAP. If he gets one make sure it has the sports suspension pack. Standard is far far far too soft. I bottomed the car on bouncy roads loads. 4WD system is very very unpredictable. If you hammer it around a tight wet junction (to see how it copes - this is what I tried) you first get understeer then grumble grumble twitch twitch then big oversteer and then it finally sorts itself out. All enough to get a little bit of poo on the seat I can tell you. Off the line its fantastic even if only two wheels on gravel. You get a touch of wheel spin while it thinks about things and then you are off like a bat out of h3ll.
A great but flawed car.
For me 23mpg around town and AC sapped loads of power too.
