Just found this article on Autoexpress ..

Move over, Subaru! Volkswagen has your legendary Impreza WRX in its sights with the most powerful production Golf ever built. This innocent-looking prototype is packing a 250bhp version of the current car's 3.2-litre V6 motor, and will offer blistering performance along with the refinement VW buyers expect.
The new model, to be revealed early next year, is likely to carry the RSi badge and will use the engine already seen in the Audi Steppenwolf and VW Microbus concepts. Essentially a reworking of the 204bhp V6 currently in the Golf, the powerplant is linked to a six-speed manual gearbox and the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

Although its looks are to differ slightly from the version seen here, the final production model will still hide its 155mph performance well. Modifications are restricted to a deeper front spoiler – with additional air intakes to cool bigger front brakes – extended side sills plus a larger rear bumper and exhaust tailpipes. The model will be launched as part of minor 2002 model year revisions for the entire Golf range. The manufacturer has scrapped plans to give its best-seller a major facelift because the current model is still popular.

Minor interior changes include new 'hoop' headrests, while the range will extend to a 150bhp PD turbodiesel and a 180bhp version of the GTI turbo. VW also plans to turn its limited-edition Beetle RSi into a full production car, using the same 250bhp engine and four-wheel-drive system as the Golf. Its styling is more aggressive, though, with lowered suspension, big alloys and an electrically operated, pop-up rear wing.

Olly.

The day that VW/Audi make a car that not only sounds good on paper but handles well then I'll buy one

However on their performance over the past decade I don't think there will be much danger of that

I thought VW had ditched the VR6 in favour of the V5???

Although i'm probably wrong!

I don't think scooby has to much to worry about from yet another front heavy Golf. Even a 4motion version will not be as balanced as a scoob.

A standard scooby might not be able to pull away that quickly from it in a straight line. But the advantage the scoob has is the AWD system and the low centre of gravity of the flat four engine.

The golf has a fat v6 upfront including transmission upfront

IMHO

It's not all about BHP.

Very True there is a golf GTI mkII that goes to the same trackdays that I and other scoobs go to, It is stripped out and has fully adjustable suspension, I can only catch it by a second or two a lap, The Chap that owns it is a very good driver that knows the limits of his car very well, A good driver is worth a load of BHP IMHO

Saw an article about this RSi

upagainst a porshe 911(996)

Price accordining to the article was £53k
thats right fifty three THOUSAND
FOR THE VW

accordining to the stats it was only marginally faster than the V6 4motion (overated car IMHO the Boss has one and a 996 and he still prefers my MY01 WRX)

would anybody spend that sort of money for a Golf

VW are going to have their work cut out to achieve anything close to a scoob. Test drove a 4 motion a few months ago. It was like getting blood out of a stone to get a test drive and realy not worth the effort. No more fun than driving a mondeo and well over priced!

Don't Audi make that RS4 estate that does
0-60 in 4.7 secs. This is probably the closest car to the Scoob wagon.

....but then doesn't it cost £40k+?

Question

Hmmm, and it will cost how much?

Talking to a guy while back about the Nissan Skyline, not sure he knew what one was. Baulked at the price and trotted out the classic "who's gonna pay that for a Nissan".

Who's gonna pay that for a VW?

Its a VW, its going to weigh about 1600kg, thats about 350kg more than a scoob, its going to handle like a bag of nails, even the 4motion aint that quick, its as quick as the old vr6, which wasnt quick really.
And if its typical VW build, the engine will no doubt be spurting oil and cut out after 400 miles
Still think its cheaper to buy the 1.8t and do something with that, much cheaper

The plan is to add the RSI to the Golf line up and not to rplace any current model,
which means the V6 4motion (204 hp) will stay, and even the V6 is more expensive than a WRX, an RSI is going to be even pricier, bringing it close to an STI or at least WRX with Prodrive kit.
I'll stick with Subaru.

My missus has got a V6 4motion and i can honestly say it is no comparison to any scoob that i've had, MY99 MY01(bug-eyed) P1. Whilst the pick up of the engine is instant in any gear the handling is cr4p, being very bouncy over slight bumps. Maybe if it was lowered a bit it would be better but it is still no match for a scoob.

IMHO.

£55K (Imported) and 0-60 in 6.5 secs??
Looks cool though.
Bet it handles like crap

All IMHO

I agree with all of the above, vw audi and all the rest in there stable just cant get balance damping and steering feel right! mk1 and Mk 2 golfs were fun to drive but after that ther lardy overweight charecters have taken over they have no chance. god knows how they will sell em, i went for a drive in the 4 motion, the salesman said the demo car is just for people who have ordered one, the ********! i wouldnt of had one unless i could have ago, he didnt see what i came in so prob thought i couldnt afford one, his loss!
