Question Jeep Grand Cherokee, what are they like?

I'm currently looking for a large 4x4 and have mainly been considering Discos, however I've just been offered a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4L straight six auto with an expenisve LPG (injection not vapour) conversion on a '99 S plate with 87k on the clock for £5200. It's got all the toys, electric seats, memory seats/mirrors, full leather, blah blah blah and a full history. It's the older shape model.

Has anyone got an experience of them?

Cheers

Sal

Awfull things. Cheap as sh*t on the inside. Bloody awfull to drive. Thirsty. LPG helps of course. My old man had one for a year. couldn't wait to get rid of it. Dealers are crap too.
Hope this helps

I have a 'R' plate one for sale despite the comments above. I think putting the petrol to one side they are alot of bang for your bucks.

All the toys, classy, and go like stink for a 4x4.

I have a very clean petrol example with 88K on the clock with the Tan leather, and want £4K for it. I have been offered 3.5K trade in various places, but would offer it to the Market for 4K for it goes.

I feel I can answer this one after owning a P plate grand cherokee (for a short time) a few years back and I can honestly say that it was the worst experience of my life

I bought the Jeep from a trader for approx 7.5k and this seemed a good price at the time (included bog paper warranty), it had a bit of rust on the bonnet but was in very good order (rust obviously badly repaired damage).
I had a journey of around one hour from the traders place and after around 40mins I heard a noise coming from the rear, when I got home I checked it over and found the rear wheel nuts loose , after phoning the trader it seems that the jeep had a rear wheel bearing replaced for the MOT and it was obvious that they had'nt tightened the wheel nuts afterwards, one of those things I thought.

After around a month the noise came back but much worse so I rang the warranty company and they said to take the car to a local garage to get an estimate so I did and the diagnosis was wheel bearing gone ( obviously had'nt been changed at all so the warranty comapny agreed to pay up and the car was booked in the next day.
The next day I got a phone call from the garage to say that after investigating further the rear diff was fecked and he could'nt carry on as he did'nt have the 'specialist tools' to do the required works, he had however forked out for the replacement wheel bearing etc so that would have to be paid for ( £200 !!!!!!).
I phoned the warranty company and they told me to phone Jeep as it was obviously a specialist job so I did, they informed me that they could have a look at £40 an hour and said it would take 8 hours to diagnose!!!, if a new diff was required the cost of the parts was £4000 not including half shafts etc

My warranty only covered up to £2000 so I was gutted it was likely to cost aprox £5000 to repair and £3000 was coming out of my pocket so I phoned around (all day) and found a specialist (only found two in the country that would touch Jeep diffs) and it was approx 100 miles away he informed me that he can fit a OE jeep diff for £1700 inc labour and it would need replacing as they always do at my milage (90k).

The warranty company were phoned and they were spot on, they agreed it was wise to take it to Portsmouth as they seemed much cheaper and go ahead even though it was a nightmare to get the Jeep there, when I got there phone the guy back when the axle was off (to diagnose cause) and he'd give me an order number no question at all.

On the day I got up at 3am in the snow and phoned the AA, they told me I was to expect a wait of 1 hour approx to pick up the Jeep and transport it to the specialist ( they were excellent) and so we got to him around 6am and waited for him to arrive ( we had to get there early so he could do the work in one day to get home that night), he got started and found the fault as being the wheel bearing failing and debris went into the diff and basically fecked it sorequired parts were diff, 2 x half shafts (told essential!) and guess what the bearing kit was wrong so i'd need another.

Phoned warranty co with Jeep on ramps and no rear axle and was told that they did'nt believe the specialist and they would have to send an assessor the following Friday (a week away) when told that this was a joke basically rendering the guys garage useless for a week we were told that we should'nt have believed his word and next time read the small print, if we carry on with out the assessors approval I would void the claim.

I had to repair the Jeep as I was stranded 100miles from home with no transport and a guys garage useless so I got my flexible friend out £2500 later I was very p*ss*d off!!!

went to citizens advice and told I had did'nt have a leg to stand on and that she heard the same story 6 times a week from these cowboy warranties. I should have returned it to the trader the first day and demanded a refund (well you live and learn)

1 week later uit would'nt start and after numerous rejections from garages ( what a JEEP no thanks) I decided it must be the crank position sensor (forums are great!) and so purchased one £100!!!! as well as a dg guard £170!!!! and best of all 8hrs labour to fit as it requires the roof lining removing to get fixings in roof structure, bought dog guard and fitted it with the two supplied J BOLTS and it took five minutes.

I got a mechanic friend round and it took three of us to fit the CPS and it started but i was told to get rid as the front diff was leaking and basically fecked

I took it to a dealer and traded it for a Citroen Berlingo and got £3000 back, not bad considering on the way the auto gearbox started to refuse to change into second ( b*sta*d car).

So in the end it cost me;

£7500 to buy
£170 dog guard
£300 Spare wheel carrier (useless boot without it)
£100 boot mat
£200 wheel bearing kit ( that turned out to be correct anyway)
£100 CPS and £50 to fit
£400 for two not required half shafts
£2100 rear diff fitted

Recieved £3000 back

so all in all it cost me £7870 for two months motoring and duing that two months it averaged 12 MPG

Lovely jubbly

DO NOT BUY ONE, jeep dealerships are c*nts and the specialists rip you off and dont get me started on the parts prices

sorry to bore you all but if I can save someone the heartbreak i endured i'd type this a hundred times a day

lol

****!!. Anyone wana buy my Jeep its going cheap! On that storey I think I will chop it into the garage that offered me 3.5K for it.

It did cost me 6K 4 months ago, and in that time I had the rear wheel bearing done, which as above had to be done at main dealer as it required special tool. But on the basis of the above if I chopped it in for 3.5K I would be ahead than if I kept it for any longer.

TBH mine could have been a friday afternoon car but that cant excuse the terrible dealer network, awful spares prices and questionable build quality (my elec heated seats did'nt work etc)

I just get angry thinking about how ripped off I was, if i'd not gone through that I could be driving round in a blob STI instaed of bug WRX now

like everything in life you have goodn's and badn's. I could tell you a horror story about a EVOV that cost me 5K in 1 month but thats another saga.

pics of JEEP and my JEEP in case anyone wondered what they looked like, plus a free plug for my car which is for sale. But after anyone reads this thread its unlikely

p.s if anyone is wondering why it in a garage forecourt is because its on a sale of return basis, and incidently the garage has it up for sale at £5995
