Default Diesel starting problems!!!!

My buddy has a Golf TD and is experiancing problems with it starting.

He has replaced the battery and a mate has give it a bit of a service, oil filters etc. and has also looked at the glow plugs!

Has anyone any idea what it could be?

Admittedley he has not had it serviced in 2 1/2 years so it was running like a bag of poo but even after the service and new battery it is still playing up.

Thanks chaps!

Old trick:

Before cranking, switch on ignition, wait for glowplug light to turn off.

Turn off ignition, wait 3 or 4 seconds

Turn back on, waint for light to go out again.

Then try starting. If it works, fault with glowplugs, associated wiring or the control unit.

'Looked at the glow-plugs'? Looking at them wont help; you need to change them! They cost chuff-all too. If swapping the plugs doesnt improve matters then it could be the glowplug relay..... If the cars an ill-maintained ****pile then it might be any number of things; Id suspect fouled injectors first; thisll manifest itself in poor starting. If the cars abused or its run a high mileage it may be caused by low compression or or even a crack in the cylinder head.....

Buy a carton of 'easystart'; thatll get anything going from cold and most diesel engines will start warm until the day they die.
