I know similar threads have been done but my wife (kim to those who know her) is looking to buy a car for between £2k-£4k... want something turbocharged/supercharged, nippy and a bit of fun. has to be special and have a lot of character...
cars so far that we are looking at are:
1. Series 1 rs turbo (kim has owned one before and loved it... classic car)
2. VW Polo G40 running 160bhp+
whatelse people... we need help!

2-3k i would buy £2000 - £2500 volvo 850 T5. Take it to www.volvotuninguk.com and then enjoy pushing every n/a (non GT) 996 from rolling to 150 !!!
As an example of how easy it is to access power, the car producing this RR sheet is a 150000 mile M reg T5 s. Total mods are panel filter and stand alone SAM ecu when it was RR on 97 ron. Since then he has added a CAT back exhaust.

Saxo VTS !?!? - not turbo or charged but easily as quick as a modified G40 and can take most RS's on under 200 hp. Cheap, handle well and very quick, for what they are !!

probably too big as well but how about a 2 door 16 valve saab 900 turbo. I was going to suggest a 9000 but this is comparable in size to andy's volvo suggestion.
or even better a saab 99 Turbo ( if 2 door then a little smaller than the 900 too), much older but so much character and your budget could buy the best of the best.
The original tarmac terrorist.

Classic 900s are luverly. I want one one day.
I think 200sx deserves a mention, but that's RWD and on the frisky side.
CRX?
I'm not sure I'd want to buy a cheap 4wd performance car... good chance of getting a moneypit imo.
Edit: or a cheap porker... first service could add 50% to the price.

just looked on autotrader and Pulsar GTIR fits the bill I think.... I looked at 200SX's too (I fancy one) but most are the touring model which is auto - does not float my boat! the other half's SLK is an auto and it's ok but not my ideal choice
a tail happy 200SX sounds like a whole load of fun to me!!

Get a half decent s14a for 4-5k, decent s14 would probably fit your budget but you say you don't want r/wd so....

ST185 GT-Fours go for 2k these days, there is one for sale on the owners club at the moment for £1300
Carlos Sainz versions usually get more money due to the limited numbers and the W2A intercooler.
Great value for money, different, not common and 4wd... all your criteria filled
