106 Diesel or similar
Thinking of getting a 106 diesel or similar car for a second car. Must be something that is absolutley cheap as chips to buy and run, not bothered about performance as i will be getting a fast car hopefully towards the end of the year as my weekend car. just need this cheap car for work, going to the shosp etc. Surely this would be a cheaper option tham running an impreza 24/7
has anyone owned such a car or soemthing similar
Thanks chaps!

Had a 106 derv for the wife a few years back. It was a '94 and gave us very little trouble and returned close to 70 mpg !!!! It has 120k + miles on it and wore them well imo.
Her brother bought it from us, drove it like he stole it and broke it no problem

Go for a diesel company car, then buy yourself a fast car. That way it only costs u fuel and a little tax off your wage each month.
This is what I have done, got a 1.7 cdti astra company car, and bought (treated) myself to a impreza weekend fun car.

Having owned a Saxo, i don't think i could put up with the driving position again.
My brother has a 306 n/a diesel though. Insurance group 3, 5 door practicality, lesser 50mpg but better perforamance. It was bought in 1997 and he is still driving it !!! Cheap as chips

I bought an escort turbo diesel as a second car as changed jobs and now doing about 450 miles a week. I did not want the scoob to rack up the miles. It is actually quite fun to drive and does 50 mpg and I do drive quite fast. So far the only money I have spent on it has been out of personal choice ie doing a bit of rust on the back wheel arch and respraying the front bumper as it was a bit scratched. I have alredy racked up 5000 in two months with no probs would reccomend one. I paid £850 for it with fsh on 88,000 miles and a years mot 2 months tax. Its a 96 silver saloon ghia so has all the extras. Look hard though as there are some dogs out there as well.

However, I was thrashing it around a bit and since I've had it the fanbelt has developed a bit of a slip and the suspension is totally knacked on one side!
(Don't think it was all my fault, just found the last comment above quite appropriate!)
