4x4 for £8000
Need something to tow my boat with and take my bikes on tha back of... fed up of getting nice cars wet / mucky!
What would you guys recommend? Must be easy to work on as I'll be maintaining it myself, reliable for the same reason, and cheapish to run...
Cheers

Toyota Hi Lux Surf 3.0 Turbo Diesel. Fantastic, reliable, fast,no cylinder head problems like the 2.4 version. Plenty of power and very reasonably priced.I've got one,it's brilliant.

It's nothing like the thing that Clarkson destroyed on TV.
It's a full 4 x 4 ,not a pick up or a double cab or anything like that. It's a Jap import called a HiLux but more like a Landcruiser.(very high spec with A/C, electrics, adjustable suspension, low range box, overdrive, decent seats etc)
The 3 litre version is absolutely brilliant,Economical, reliable and masses of grunt.350lbs/ft torque. Auto's are best as they make for such easy towing and effortless cruising.
I towed a 5 tonne huge static caravan through a field in mine on virtual tickover.
The 2.4 version is riddled with cylinder head problems but the 3 litre is virtually fault free.

Pauleds2 how economical exactly?? Is there a 7 seat option with these(i fear not)
thread hijack sorry,I've got a Nissan Mistral http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1.../mist32802.jpg
I know they get slagged a fair bit for drivetrain problems but so far no probs with mine, in 4x4 its awsome ,7 seats (3 kids) 2.7TD ,fuels killing me slightly worse than my old wrx!
Always liked the look of Toyota but for some reason never investigated further

Hi Colin,
When i say economical i mean economical for a 2 tonne 4 x 4.
On a nice steady run mine returns about 25mpg.
I find the auto box helps believe it or not because it tends to change up early and make the best of the engine's torque.
You can put it in sport mode though and it kicks down more readily and holds each gear for longer.Pity there's no 7 seat option but the boot is truly cavernous.
Also parts are dirt cheap.I get mine mail order from www.milneroffroad.com

Still better mpgs than my Nissan which is also an auto with the Hold/Power(sport) facility. My box seems to hold onto gears too long, wish it was a manual! Never mind She likes it and its her thats in it more than me
Maybe buy Myself a cheaper Hi lux instead of yet another Scoob.
cheers
