Best crap diesel for 500 quid ??
I'm thinking of buying a 2nd car for the daily commute...
Whats the most reliable of the old/crap diesels? I'm thinking about Rover Metros/ Rover Maestros etc
Any recommendations??

Yeah also been looking at the Citroen. What's the AX like as a Diesel? Don't like the 205 diesel...

The Metro's driving positon will kill you on a commute.
Not sure if they are down to that price yet but a Skoda Felicia 1.9D would be a good choice, decent enough drive, power steering and a comfortable drivng position.
Running gear is nearly all VW and the 1.9D is basically the same unit that is still used today although it has the old style mechanical pump and indirect injection head.
Cheers

A mate just got a ZX TD estate for £500, one owner, full CSH, 120,000 miles and it is in VERY good nick.
The ZX and early Pug 306s seem to be unloved and therefore cheap ...

Rover 218 and 418 turbo diesels go very well, not too sluggish on the motorway and cheap to run.
I've owned a few of them now and there are pretty much bullet proof in the engine department, hard wearing interior, electrics rarely break etc

Maestro, i used to have one and they seem bullet proof no matter how much abuse they get, admitt that they rot very well though !
IMO i'd stay away from anything thats french as they drop to bits and are a pain in the *** to work on.

If you can find one which isnt too rusty the Maestro or Montego 2.0 Diesel is actually a good engine - should average at least 50mpg and pretty tough. Know a couple of people who've seen 200k odd out of these, and even then I think the cars rusting was the reason for the car being scrapped, not the engine.

Should be able to pick up a Corsa 1.5 D on an M or N plate for that. These have an Isuzu engine in them and are pretty straight forward and reliable, also good for 60 mpg

Pug 205 diesel has been mentioned, but consider the consider the 309 diesel too. Bought one a couple of years ago for 750 quid. It was reliable and cost me nothing except regular oil changes. I put about 15,000 miles on it in a year and sold it for 700 quid. That's the type of depreciation I like!

Forget the old Rovers, way to old, the youngest is about a 1994, forget the Metro, utter dog **** (Have had a few), the Rover's rust, badly, my money would be on the french stuff, buy the simplest model you can get, i.e. without electrics and turbo's, I had a 309, it was a petrol but very robust where it counted, didnt rust and kept on going, never really did anyhing to it over a year and then sold it for a profit.

In the summer we bought a Citroen ZX 1.9D with 50,000 miles for £1250 in immaculate condition. It does between 50 and 60 mpg depending on how hard its driven.
