Thumbs up Anyone had a VW Polo (97 on)?

Hi,

The girlfriend has had enough of her pug 106 and she fancies a vw polo,so im wondering if theres anything to look out for on them, what they are like to own(any problems) etc.

Shes after one from R reg onwards, probably the 1.4 model with as low mileage as poss really.

So,what are they like to own? When do things start to go wrong?,what are parts prices like? Is the 1.4 unit a good one?Do they have any common faults?Etc Etc.

Hope some of you can help by giving us some info on these little cars

Dunc

The GTi had issues with the clutch pedal box failing. Costs a few quid to fix. Not sure if others share the same hardware...

The wife had the basic 1.0L model (97). It gave a 40 odd mpg even when it was 7 years old. She got it from new and never had one problem with it

In saying that it was the epitomy of the second car stereotype ie School run, round the shops and into town type car. As a result it had only covered about 35000 in 7 years but it never failed to start.

I didnt bother with the dealer service after the warrenty and carried out everything myself. The only thing it needed was oil, plugs, filters and a set of brake pads in all that time.

She loved it so much she bought another one. The new 1.4 Twist

I had obviously driven it quite a bit and was really disappointed with the handling. It rolled and understeered like a demon but then again what 3 door base model would handle like a scoob

This new bugeye model is really good, steers nice and feels a lot more expensive than it is. Great 3 cylinder engine aswell, nice and responsive

Owned a 1.6GL before the Scoob for 4 years and gave us trouble free motoring bar 2 times which include:

Cutting Out On Roundabout > Fuel Pump Fuse Blew

And electrical problem with the Dash sent it mad eg milleage was unreadable and speedo was registering wrong spead > Replaced Dash Thru VW

Other than that it was a great first motor, owned from new on a 98Plate and sold with fVWsh & 40,000 Miles for only £3000.

If your sticking with the 1.4 you only really have 2 options:

1.4 16v - 100bhp & Sporty Bumpers Alloys and Interior
or
1.4 8v SE - 60bhp But comes with the 16v toys, bumpers Interior.

Best

We got a 1.4 TDi on an '03 plate. It's a good car although it understeers a lot in the wet. I'm hoping a change of tyres will sort that out. It gives about 40 mpg and is happy at 80mph on a motorway. I've started to use it a fair bit during the week instead of the Scoob. It's fine for round town

Well guys,
thanks for all the info!!

All the replies seem positive with only a few niggly faults.
Her budget is around £2500+her car(worth around £500!)

She isnt bothered about handling Shes more bothered about the colour of the bloo*y thing

That 1.4 SE sounds interesting Ashley,i quite like the different bumpers and better interior.

These cars seem to be quite rare round near me(Blackpool)at the dealers,
Most are the 5 door bog standard ones with the steel wheels.

Thanks once again for the info guys
