Unhappy Honda drivers must HATE him!

On the way to work yesterday I passed an old beat up Mondeo. It was a 1.8 with shabby wheel trims, around and about 6 years old, in poor condition and a crap sky blue colour - nothing special! His reg plate was................wait for it......................Not a fake, the proper letters and numbers..........................S 2000 What a crime to have it on that car

Manufacturer: Ford
Model: MONDEO ASPEN
Body type: 5 door hatchback
Colour: Blue
Fuel type: Heavy oil
Date manufactured: 30 December 1996
Number of previous owners: 3
Last owner change: 06 December 2003

Looks like it was re-registered in December, maybe he's holding onto the plate until he gets his S2000...

Fair point, I though you couldn't represent the car as younger than it is It was defo S 2000 though - not any other letters or numbers.

How can S be on a 96 car
History Lesson

Before the A123ABC registrations which started in 1984, registrations were in the format ABC123A. The A suffix started on Jan 1 1963 and B followed a year later. The E suffix was an anomaly as this lasted from Jan 1 1967 to July 31st. The F suffix started on August 1 1967 and subsequent changes of dated registration letters were on the first of August.

So, what did they do before date specific registrations? Well, a local registration authority (County Council, County Borough Council, etc. - all this is pre-DVLA) would have a letter combination that they could issue. In the case of Paisley, this was XS; they could issue any four digit combination after the letters. So, back around 1903, they would issue XS 1 and keep going until they got to XS 9999. When they ran out of numbers of that pattern, they stuck a letter in front of the XS and then only issued 999 numbers in the new pattern; therefore, the reg following XS 9999 was AXS 1. This pattern would run to AXS 999 which sould be followed by BXS 1.

Some authorities reached their limits (assuming that the 2 letters were BB) of YBB 999 back in the Forties. They then started issuing regs with the numbers before the letters - eg. 756 ABB.

Numbers in this pattern were not age specific. CXS 756 might have been issued in 1960, but CHS 756 could have been issued in 1953 (both these dates are approximately correct. Sad, or what?!).

In 1963, some authorities started the new ABC 123A format. Not all did, so there are some '63 cars with non-age specific regs. Some time in '64, most reg authorities were using the year-specific suffixes, so there are still some '64 cars with non age related numbers. By '65, I think the new format was universal.

Anyway, back in the pre-'63 days, some authorities had a single letter rather than two letters such as XS. "S" was allocated to Edinburgh, so S 2000 is a very old Edinburgh number (likely to be around 90 years old).

I've checked the RAC site and the reg on the Mondeo is S 2000, not S 2 OOO.

Hmmm, so you could have two cars. One with the plate S2000 and one with S2OOO. Imagine the confusion when nabbed by cameras/congestion charge etc.
