My Sister in law totalled one, rolled it and came away battered bruised and sore but alive, their other car is a Pug 106, wonder if that would have protected her as well as the Golf ?

Why not try a Skoda, there are plenty on Autotrader website.
They should be cheap to insure and being part of VW, they should be pretty robust.

Hi Luke,
Depends on your budget, but my wife has a 1994 Toyota Rav 4 and loves it. She changed her MX 5 for the Rav and would not have anything else - very very safe, great to drive and four wheel drive.
We have had the car since January of this year and it has been 100% reliable.
Great car to get all the shopping in!

Get her a Yaris. We have got one thats 18 months old, and apart from a few ml of oil and a 65 quid 10000 mile service it has cost nowt.
Runs on fresh air and is very comfortable for a small car, theres far more room in the back than my Clio. You can get loads of shopping in cos you can slide the back seat forward to give more boot space.

Of course, you could easily have a ng900 (Saab) for buttons, very solid classy car, but perhaps not very suitable for a first car - heavy clutch and quite bulky. Reckon a mk3 Golf is still the best idea.
