...and hassled by a BMW 540

On my way back this time. At the lights, he shot off, so I took the bait. VERY hard to keep up with once rolling. Luckily a few twisties (c) came our way, then joining the motorway did the 60-80 trick in 3rd. I pulled away but then called it a day as I didn't want to really go over 80mph. Needless to say he shot past and vanished into the distance.

as we are engaged in a game of top trumps is now a good time to mention that EVO magazine has a standard UK Impreza 98-00 rated at 177bhp per ton?
Anyway if the bits fall off the cup perhaps it will be able to raise its power/weight ratio to that of a frankly pretty slow standard UK turbo

Have to agree the BMW image (especially as pictured) is as poor as an Impreza's- just a different kind of poor image, the Impreza screams boy racer with no cash, the BMW screams thrusty w*nker with attitude problem and a large finance bill.
Screw the image and enjoy the cars.

No I live in an area where 5 series are driven mainly by arrogant pr1cks with an over inflated sense of their self worth.
Now I'm not saying by any means that all 5 series driver fall into that category and I'm sure that you don't, but that is the image they project IMHO.
Wouldn't stop me buying one though as I don't give a toss about image, thus why I own an Impreza.

emthreewannabe,
You wouldn't like me to let you down now would you?
Anyway if you want to go somewhere with no 'anti-BMW' bias why don't you hang out on a BMW forum instead? Never could understand why you and a few others on here expect everyone to love the 'ultimate driving machine' (sic) - they are after all fairly diametrically opposed to an Impreza and this is an Impreza bulletin board is it not?
Have a nice day!
tiggers.

"540 strikes me as a wannabe M5 "
what does that mean? most cars have more expensive versions so are they all wannabes? whats a Ferrari? a wannabe space ship?
a 540 is a 40k+ car....bit rich for it to be called a wannabe by scoob owners (are they not all wannabe 22bs ?
personaly, when i had my scoob i was a wannabe in a better car person!
and i choose the 540 over the M5 because it was an auto- important to me. not every choice is down to speed- this is why the BMW is so popular in any form. when you buy a house the location, locatioon, location theory only goes so far- you wouldnt buy a ****hole in a great location.....the same applies to the performance, performance, performance issue with cars.

Erm........no i ain't a wannabe 22b owner......i'm a wannabe M5 owner believe it or not. But the best 'performance car' for me on my budget was a scooby hence me postin on this forum and stickin with scoobies for the mo.
hmmm not every choice is down to speed...so why a 540 instead of a 525 ?!

"so why a 540 instead of a 525"
my needs where simple, as was my budget- i wanted a second hand car- no more than 2 yrs old/30k miles, under full maker warranty.
i wanted a fast, comfy auto and the best way to make an auto a pleasure is to give it big power. once i decided on a bwm i also wanted the body kit and all the extras that are limited to the V8's as standard.
the 535 seemed to offer little saving over the 540 so i went for that.
a 525 would be slower with a less pleasurable auto box.
I was lucky because at 25-30k the 540 is the top of BMW's range that fit my spec and its a superb car. i can certainly think of nothing that would beat it in many aspects of driving....which is why its regarded as being the best in class (untill latley where the merc does well but is out of budget)
T
ps- if the M5 had an auto (like the E55) i would have had that but im not paying over 20k on a non-sports car that i have to drive 90% of the time at 50% of its ability and not have an auto box on it. i dont tune the radio, wind the windows, start the car or change the gears manually- never will. (unless its a sports car)

whether the box differs or not i find one with 300bhp is nicer!
"thrusty w*nker with attitude problem"
whats an attitude problem? if the attitude causes no problem to the owner of it is it still a problem? in my case my attitude is one that satisfies me and my family with much joy and wealth....so who has the problem?
i daren't ask what thrusty means!

Tiggs- just to re-iterate I wasn't talking about you, just a stereotype of BMW drivers. A bit like Impreza driver stereotype as a baseball cap wearing thug whose huge rear wing compensates for his lack of cojones. That isn't true either BTW.
