Range Rover 4.6 HSE.....
#1
Hi folks, going to see a Range Rover 4.5 HSE with 2002 Vogue Spec this weekend, anything in particular I should look out for or any advice on this model in general.

Look for everything, and I mean everything. The list of things prone to failure is too long for me to even contemplate typing. Get a specialist to give it thorough inspection if you have no experience of Range Rover's, it really needs to spend 2-3 hours getting checked out at a garage.

Cheers reffro, it's from a RR specialist and comes with warranty etc. It's low mileage and looks mint but I want reliabilty
So should I be avoiding the marque altogether?

If its a minter and has a proper warranty then I'd go for it. The only thing is with them is that there are so many things that can and do go wrong for a number of owners. I like Range Rovers, but you have to always keep in the back of your mind there might be some huge bills to come, even the servicing isn't cheap. Air suspension, alloy V8 that hates overheating, lots of lovely electrical gizmo's and gearboxes all need careful looking after.

You really need to double check absolutley every gadget on those things. Including the petrol cap release! Air Suspension is prone, as is pretty much eveything electric on it.
Engine-wise is not too bad...Make sure it's serviced well, as they eat camshafts/tappets. And also make sure it's had coolant changes too otherwise it goes acidic and eats the gaskets. 4.6's to tend to run rather hot too so the coolant is very important.
If's converted to LPG, make sure it dos'nt miss or back-fire whilst on LPG as it kills the MAF sensor. Normally the miss-firing is cured just by changing the plugs and leads (LPG requires the ignition system to be perfect).

Just saw this. Did you buy it? Just been through the whole process - saw 12 cars and got one in the end.
Porous blocks on 4.6 versions - that's a nice one to look out for! If you are still looking I can advise; if you got it see you on track D

We had two 4.6 HSE's; one for a week when the air suspension gave up while we were on holiday in Dublin, and the other had its gearbox replaced twice as well as the radiator.
For all their problems we still loved them though, and now have a new 4.4 Vogue which is even better
I'd still prefer to have a HSE over pretty much any other 4x4 out there, including the X5, Merc ML, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Land Cruiser etc etc...
The engine sounds so much better than the new RR's as well
