Escort TD takes ages to start when cold, why does it?
#1
1996 Turbo diesel, changed glow plugs but takes about 20-30 secs to start when cold, when warm about 2 secs, this morning took longer to start, had to stop turning and try again before starting, could it be any seals anywhere or the battery, does sound a bit slow turning over.
Any info appreciated
PS. did have a scoob once you know.

Have you checked the fuse that protects the glow plugs? usually a feckin big silver piece of metal! or could be the timer for the glow plugs?

Poissible answer ?
crack in the cylinder head = lower compression = won't start properly.
Once it's warm the cylinder head has expanded, crack is closed up, starts first time.
Had the same problem with a Passat diesel. Only cure would be new cylinder head, probably not worth getting it welded/ground etc, and you could pick one up from a scrappy I'm sure, but clean it up and look near the valves for any signs of cracks - thats where mine went.

If the head is cracked it would pressurise the water system and eventually overheat due to gasses in the water
a crack itself wouldn,t stop it starting though

Your clue is in the turning over slowly comment.
A diesel turning over slowly will struggle to generate enough heat to self combust even with the glow plugs pre heating the cylinder. The colder the ambient temp the worse it's going to start.
Get decent new battery, have the alternator checked out and if all else fails have the starter motor checked.
A battery can still hold charge and appear OK but not provide the massive cold start current required by a diesel.

It could be your timer relay is fcuked and is shutting off too early.
Try this: Swtich on ignition, wait for the glow-plug light to turn off. Then switch off then back on again, wait for light to go out again, then do it once more (for good measure )
Then try and start it...if it works - then that's your problem
Edited: Good battery helps - as mentioned above...get it load-tested properly.
