How different is the VW version of this car? I understand it is the same car without the fancy badge and is quite a lot cheaper?

Chap took one back because he could only get 8 MPG, porsche gave him his money back.
I looked at one but got scared off by that , the interior isn't that big and we couldn't get a test drive before ordering.
Impressive beast if you need true off road ability, if not.
If you still want 4wd with better grip, noticably better performance and more room how about an RS6 Avant ?
If you want a good ride, better grip, noticably better performance and more room how about an E55AMG estate ?
If you get a test drive, post up your findings

Just moved house and theres two yes two, on my road alone! I think they are awful, I'd just get a Touraeg if you must!
I'm nearly sick everytime I see so I just stay indoors incage
Not bad inside but then again an RS6 is stunning, that takes my vote!

The VW uses a lot of different body panels.. the rear end is very different. I believe the brakes and suspension units are not the same along with bits if the engine. Its still a bloody joke as far as the MPG goes... realy stupid and not good engineering. This should get a great diesel in it and around 25-30mpg with less power...but still a great drive.... I like it.. but if it was down to me I would never have built it.

Don't own one, but have driven one a fair bit (an "S") over the last few weeks.
Likes: The handling and feedback, performance, the cabin, the badge and the driving presence (its like looking down the bonnet of a 911 from the driver's seat). Looks are a grower as well. IMHO far better with the spare wheel on the boot.
Dislikes: Surprisingly harsh ride, even on "small" 18 inch rims, surprisingly rattly cabin, and odd 6 speed box that hunts around for cogs too much.
Its not for Olly, (a new E55AMG, or a used S class, Caterham and a P1 would be better for £51k), but you can't fail to be impressed.

There's a 3.2 V6 (petrol) coming out soon priced at about 10K cheaper than the S (just called 'Cayenne'.) Porsche will have to bring out a diesel sooner or later, as it accounts for something like 60% of sales of other marques' off road versions like the X5 and ML series. Cayenne only exists to underpin development of the other models so they may as well milk it for all they can get.

Porsche will NOT bring out a diesel, never.
The car is selling well in the states, and our cousins across the water have never felt the need for an oil burner SUV.
Its a clever bit of merketing (again) by Porsche that a high percentage of Porsche owners in the US already have an SUV, and it is that market they are trying to grab.

Sorry but no! From the front they look like a 996 on stilts, and from the back they look like the cheaper VW SUV offering the Toureg (spelling?!?!)
Also if anyone could tell me how much a replacement exhaust is for a Cayenne (from Porsche) then I would be most grateful!! Has anyone else noticed the sheer size of the Back box????

"They had better not! But if it kept them an independant motor manufacturer, I would let them off!"
I think you have to question just how independent thay actually are. The V6 is simply a VW engine. The Toe-rag and the forthcoming Audi are essentially the same car.
The DSG gearbox from the Audi is going to be on the 997.
Is it really independent?

It's not the first time Porsche have used non-Porsche parts in their cars, the 356 had a lot of VW parts and also the 4-cylinder 914's had a VW engine, so it's not a new thing although it has been a long time.

Seem to recall that the Turbo Cayenne was as fast as the current M3 around Palmer's Bedford circuit, and only 3 secs adrift of an Evo 8 when Evo mag tested them.....
