I know people rave on about VW's being capable of millions of miles without a problem, but realisticly, how many miles would be safe when buying a used vr6?
What kind of problems are likely to crop up on the high milers?

Thanx in advance for any info,

Cheers,

Steve

Thumbs up

If Air con Fitted compressor thinks its a service item ive seen all sorts go wrong on early vr6`s later models are the better buy storms are best buy and best residuals 1 of 500 and i know of 3 that were written off within weeks of delivery so its 1 of 497ish!
head gaskets were down to none VW anti freeze being too corrosive IIRC

Exclamation

M8 bought one with 60k on the clock. Put another 70k on mostly at the rev limiter. Then he got it supercharged and its still going strong at 160k. Doesn't have aircon though. The only part he had to replace has been the top radiator hose

Had 45,000 on my 95 M Corrado VR6 when I got it, 80,000 on it when it went.

It never missed a beat.

Best car I ever owned.

Engines generally 'bulletproof' - can be rattley on start up and at idle (I put it down to the hydraulic tappets and the fact that it is chain driven with tensioners that operate via oil pressure).

As mentioned above really watch out for the coolant. VW recommend something called G12+, this is red/pink - they used to state either G11 (blue) or G12 , which I don't think are made any more. Important thing is not to mix G11 and G12, they form a gel. VW say that G12+ can be mixed though (although don't quote me!)

Unfortunately you really have to look out for clocked cars, they hide the miles well.

Common faults are the ABS sensor (light stays on) - only 30 - 40 quid for a new one. Sunroof and active spoiler can malfunction. Check that the windows don't rattle when shuttin the doors - apparently they can come off the runners. Oh and the wipers are possibly the worst you will ever have encountered!!

Can burn a bit of oil too, so I would keep on top of the oil level regularly. VW say 1 litre every 1000kms!! I've never seen it that bad though!

All in all I believe it is the best car you can get for the money. Pace, style, quality and rarity - what more do you want!!

Hope this is of some help,

Nev
