Timing Belt on a Hyundai Coupe
#1
Hi guys,
Forgive my ignorance when it comes to cars, but I dont know much Im afraid. I am buying a Hyundai Coupe this week. It has just had it s 40k service, where you are recommended to have the timing belt done. The AA serviced the car and said they would recommend it being done at 40k, but you can leave it till 50k. The car has now done 42k. What I would like to know is would you risk it and wait until the 50k service to have the timing belt done, or should I get it done straight away? What can actually go wrong with a timing belt? Is it just a case of if it goes wrong, all you have to fix is what you would of done anyway, or is it like a cambelt when it can ruin other things aswell?
Thanks for any replies,
Steve

It's usually for the peace of mind to get belts done on schedule. I'm not familiar with this engine but 'most' in production today could suffer expensive damage if the belt lets go.. For expensive read bent valves, damaged pistons, damaged con-rods.. etc etc
I'd get it done..
I'd get it done..

I might end up doing that, but its my brothers car and he has had no end of problems with the Hyundai garage in Northampton. Plus, I just assumed that they would charge more than a none dealer garage - is that not the case normally?

It depends what year your car is. If its a double headlight model (MY99 onwards) then the cambelt is 60K IIRC but the earlier single headlight cars are 40k. The later cars only need a water/generator belt but that wouldn't damage the car if it failed.

A 98 S should have a timing belt and auxilary belts at 40K, if it's had a 40K service and no belts it hasn't been done right! It should also have had, plugs, fuel filter and air filter aswell as the ordinary service stuff.
I used to work in a Hyundai dealership btw
