S4 vs MY00 Scoob?
#1
(In a foreign country late one dry, clear night)
I was driving very late one night on a dual carridgeway when I tootled past a bright yellow S4 Audi. I thought nothing of it until about 5 miles further I noticed his Xenon lights catching up on me. I slowed just in case it was an Omega of some sort (you know what I mean), the S4 dropped a cog or 2 and blatted past. I was ready in 4th just in case it was the Audi so that I could find out who was quicker (and to break the monotony of the journey).
My accelerator was planted and I gave chase. He pulled out 4/5 car lengths on me before I felt he wasn’t getting away from me anymore, but he slowed for a roundabout so I couldn’t see if I could catch up. He was going the same way as me, so I could see how well he’d go around the roundabout and accelerate up a tight curve away from it. He seemed to have more grip/less under steer on the ‘bout but I caught him easily on the tight curve. He couldn’t lose me after that on the single carrigeway stuff.
After some villages and sensible driving in the 30 zones, which I applaud, we came to another dual carriageway section. I new it was coming and so did he.
The road was clear and he was in front as we both exited the roundabout to join the dualled section. I waited for him to make the first move because I didn’t want to look a **** and blast past when he drove slowly.
He went for it and I followed. My misses said to me “I wonder who will be the quickest?” and I replied “we’ll find out”. He pulled out another 4/5 car lengths, which I put down to my reaction time, and then I started to close on him. My car reached the back of his until I realised I had more to go and I could then move out to overtake. To be honest I crept past him and I had enough room to pull in front but no more than that. My car was running out of puff and if we’d have had enough room, I’d guess that his superior aerodynamics and top speed would have let him past me again. We’ll never know as we caught some traffic and had to end the ‘test’.
Anyway it was lots of fun and I was happy to have won on this occasion. The Audi was quick though and I can see why Jeff Wiltshire has migrated to one after the Scooby he had had (although his is chipped with big brakes etc).
For the record the Audi was T reg, yellow and very clean/well looked after. I’ve no idea whether it had been chipped or not, but I assume not. If it was chipped then I suppose he would not be a happy bunny! The book says std S4 is 265BHP/295blft so it looks comparable with a light Scooby.

That's what I thought John.
I'm puzzled though, usually verses threads get much more heated responses. I guess that I should have been more biased in my appraisal, something like "S4's are sh!te, I whooped him good and proper whif na problems - scoobs are wickid".

It sounds like the car was standard.....a re-mapped S4 'should' leave a UK Impreza.....There is a Imola Yellow S4 running around with K04 turbos giving about 390BHP & 450lb/ft.

Out dragged a 996 Carrera from 20 to something over the legal speed limited down a dual carriageway yesterday.....The Porsche owner didn't like being left behind by an Audi

Its the 4.2 V8 from the A8 that they have managed to squeeze into the engine bay, its got bags more grip than the M3 and IMHO its alot more exclusive, you dont seemany about whereas there are loads of new M3's round my way!!

This has nothing to do with the fact the driver of the S4 WAS better than you!
He might also know the limits of his car better than you know the limits of the your scoob.

The power to weight ratio of the 2.7 biturbo S4 is about the same as the standard WRX but the car is much more refined than the WRX which is what you would expect from a car that cost approx. £35k brand new. Also it's more discreet with the only obvious hint of performance being the 17 inch wheels.
I recently bought a 1999 T reg S4 and really enjoy the experience although it's not as "raw" as the impreza one.
One thing I would suggest to anybody considering buying one is to get Audi warranty which costs about £700 p.a. Mine has 40k miles on the clock and since I bought it 5 months ago I've had the water pump and power steering pump replaced under warranty. The 3.0 A4 cabriolet courtesy car was much better than the proton I used to get from my Subaru dealer.
