Great handling, go-kart like, not enough power, cheap and nasty interior, generally bits drop off..

Having owned a series one Williams, I would say that they are fun little cars to own and drive. The interiors are a bit on the plastic side and a bit bland, but the engine is very responsive and is a true point and steer car. My only negative comments would be that the engine compartment is very tight, but you can still do your own serviceing quite easlity. Just dont try to do anything else as its almost going to be an engine out job. The othe thing I woold say ist that they are way too pricey for what they are....but if you got your heart set on one......

Get rid of the 206 GTi and get one of the good Pug GTi's...
I've had a 106 GTi, was looking at moving to a 206 GTi, drove one, was not impressed and so I got a 306 Rallye.
Trust me, the 206 is the duffer of the family.
As for the Clio Williams, great car but a little dated now.

Must admit, had a go in a 206 GTI, not impressed, Clio Williams is a beast though and you can find nice ones, they are generally overpriced for what is a Clio 16 Valve with an Extra 12 BHP, a commerative plaque and some Gold Wheels.

Try here - www.cliosport.net - very good website - check using the search and you will find loads of williams questions.
I bought a Williams 2 3 months ago. I ignore the supposed 13bhp over the 16v Clio. Its 2.0 is a different beast over the 16v's 1.8. Its more torquey lower down the revs - great for coming out of corners. There are some real bargins now if you look about - and they are actually quite solid cars (for a french car anyway). Far more exclusive than most cars (espec a scoob LOL) and mine turns loads of heads although I didnt think it would. Had strangers asking me about it!! 4 so far usually in petrol stations! Oh and 27mpg very enthiastic driving!

For what it's worth i had a 16v which i rated over my very mint Pug 1.9 GTi. To me the whole driving experience was much better. It only missed one thing though! - Low down torque. From what these boys are saying, thats what the ***** seems to excel in over the valver.

If you get a good Williams, you can expect it to run low 15's over the 1/4 mile. Slight engine mods can take it under 15, so there's an indication of what the straight line performance is like!

Brakes are teh sam eas the valver, as is most of it, its teh engine thats different.
Yes it may only be 13bhp more, but it pulls form a hell of a lot lower down than the valver engines, valver engines come alive at 4k, ***** ones a lot less.
Saying this, they dont rev as freely as the 1.8, and only rev to 6500, instead of 7k.
Still a monster though.
Quick in a clio, good on the road but if I was to make a track car id have a tned 1.8 rather than a 2 litre, it revs a lot better, the 2 litre kinda runs out of puff.

The Williams also has better brakes (iirc) and a wider track suspension, stiffer damping etc i.e. it handles quite differently from the 16v.
I had a 16v for 55k miles, it never broke down, and nothing ever fell off. Agree that the interior is about Scoob quality.
Only downside is that the Renault dealers are absolutely, horrendously awful.
Edited to say: my front wheel bearings did go, but after 50k miles and 4 months driving on snowy, heavily salted roads, so I wasn't that surprised.
