Question

A friend has bought himself an X5 and wants to bring it with him to London and register it here. He needs a MPH speedo to get the SVA. Does anyone know how he can do this without changing the entire insturment cluster (BMW;s suggestion)? He wants to pay less than that would cost and would like to keep KM odometer for it's repatriation to Belgium in the future. Ordinarily one would just buy a sticker to lay over the speedo...but he can't find anyone who does it!

Surely as the X5 is type approved it just needs registering not SVA'ing - hence no need for stickers etc...

Otherwise its worth having a look here - http://www.importcarparts.co.uk/conversions/ for speedo transfers/conversions

Don't think it needs a SVA. Maybe a COC (Cert of Conformity), but that's only for a new car.

On my car the importer fitted an in line convertor then wehre it said KM/H the K was blacked out to say M/H.

Works OK on a new car, otherwise your converting the odometer kilometers to miles too !

Hmmm... I have a Merc 500E that still has the km/h speedo and I have no problem with that in terms of MOTing etc. Perhaps it's over a certain age that means it doesnt have to have the same paperwork

It wont need an SVA though.

http://www.roads.dft.gov.uk/vehicle/sva/pi5/index.htm should cover pretty much everything you need to know.

He needs a Mobile Phone glueing to his ear, Blacked out windows (fully opaque) and to be fitted with a bad attitude and only then will his X5 truly be ready.

He better also check the indicator stalk is removed before he drives it.

I believe non-UK spec cars have this fitted and it's not a requirement on BMW's here.

The flowchart on the link Witchfinder provided makes it clear that the european spec (ie LHD) cars need MPH on the speedo to register permenantly over here. The guy is Belgian...imagine Belgian driver, X5, British roads.....*shudder*
