Zetec into Ka: Will it go?
#1
Not exactly Subaru related, but...
Now that my 2.8 Capri restoration is finished, its time for another project. Always fancied the idea of a warmed over Ka, and the sensible choice would be to dump the wheezy old Anglia motor for a standard (ish) 1.7 Puma motor or 2.0 Focus lump.
Can't seem to find any info. Anyone ever come across such a conversion?

Yes it can be done...
How much work ????
Have a look to see if in other cars the push rod engine can be swapped without welding etc..
Electrical and drivetrain will be a problem...
See if a fiesta engine will go.. (zetec will go in there so should go in a ka, if you follow??)

Best conversion that people are doing is the old RS turbo lump into a KA There is a KA about with a 2 litre zetec in it with a turbo and 150 bhp nitrous that gives it 600 bhp and runs 19"s I think The puma idea would be a nice one, I know people have done this to fiestas and there was a feature in last months fast or performance ford (I forget which) with 2 fiestas in with puma lumps. Speak to pumaspeed for conversions

A zetec will go in! My ZVH turbo will be in the ka within 6 weeks hopefully!
Its an 1800 zetec bottom end, CVH head, turbo etc, with cossie injectors I should see way over 200bhp with a standard head + turbo with the trick engine management thats being used (anti lag comes as standard ), and I've got ye olde Nitrous kit I havent used for a year!

Apparently the 1800 zetec is an easier motor to put in, I think the inlet or exhaust manifold on the 1700 puma engine makes life difficult in the KA. With the 1800 engine you can eventually turbo it if you wish, another nicety (may also apply to the puma engine) is that the KA's gearbox (IB5) will bolt straight onto the 1800 zetec engine which means you only have to fabricate 1 engine mount (the other two are on the gearbox) and you can leave in place the gear linkage, first, second and third gears from the Puma fit straight into the Ka box, some people have used these as they're shorter ratio than the ka, this will make it feel like you have more power

Ford / FordRacing are releasing the Sport KA this year, they're supposidly 1600 zetecs, it may be worth holding on for these then you can buy a 1600 scrap and buy the engine mounts from Ford, it'll be less hassle than the engine conversion but it will still mean there'll be KAs as quick as you!

Bobfrog: the Puma cluster does indeed fit into the Ka casing: the Ka rally championship cars use these along with the standard Ka crownwheel and pinion (higher ratio than Puma) and standard linkages to produce a closer ratio 'box and less top speed.
1800 Zetec fitting onto Ka bellhousing is very interesting. Suppose the one to go for is the Escort Si, 130bhp? (1.8 Zetec Focus quotes 115bhp?)

I have the 1800 115bhp Escort engine, the only real differences between this and the 130bhp engine is the throttle body and the ECU
Olly, when do you plan to start the conversion?

Pretty much conceptual at the minute Bobfrog. Its early days, so trying to establish methods, parts to use, costs etc before actually deciding to take the plunge. Hence the questions. Plus I have just finished a full resto on this which has taken its toll a little on my social life, wallet, and woman, and I have 2 houses to finish renovating, so could be a week or two .
Looking rosier by the minute though. Always fancied building a 2.0 Nova as a youngster, and have toyed with the Ka idea for a while. Now that second hand Ka prices are falling, and Zetec motors are anywhere, it seems a viable little project.
PS Just found a lightly damaged, complete Escort Si 1800 16v for sale, 59000 miles, £650 negotiable. hmmm..

Thanks to all.
The idea would be to create a faster, sweeter Ka but without seriously altering the basic dynamics, handling or driveability of the standard Ka (which I like a lot). Call me a girl, but Q car looks, good handling, good torque and standard car reliability appeal far more than snorty motors and big wheels. Hence the untouched, bigger engine route. Traction could be the limiting factor. Look on it as a useable, modern day 205 GTi (big cc's into small car).
Already cast a tape measure around a standard Ka and a 1.7 Puma, its a squeeze and some items may have to go to the boot (battery etc) but it looks feasable, although the Puma plenum looks a problem. Bonnet bulge?
