As skid says, try the above GtiR Forum, its getting big enough now to get a decent opinion.
Like Scoobies, there's many plus points, too many to mention, for example they are different, have hardly any lag at all but with power range from 2500rpm through to 7500rpm, and can do a 1/4mile in 13.9sec as standard if setup correctly for just 220bhp. Little money can get you into the 12s. They only weigh 1250kg (with aircon) and therefore can be quicker than other similar cars for the same amount of genuine power. The handling is very balanced and chuckable but it can feel like a fwd at times, handling kits can sort this out if required. Normal drivers still don't know what they are which can be fun.
If your into modifying, and like the cossie, a lot of GtiRs are, then the restricting points, which can all be improved, are:
- Brakes - requires bigger wheels and 4 pots
- Top mount intercooler - requires a front mount conversion
- Clutch - requires uprating if anything more than standard
If big power i.e over 300bhp is what your after then:
- Pistons - requires forged ones higher than 1 bar boost
- Turbo - can not run much more than 320bhp, requires Hybrid etc
- Gearbox - main problem running higher power, uprate to a PAR box
They can be tuned to over 400bhp but this will give you major gearbox problems, there are a few buying the PAR boxes now that can handle this so watch this space.
There are many poor ones around that were imported, so look very hard before you buy. They require setting up correctly even if standard, especially the fuel. You need to know how to modify them and look after them correctly otherwise, like any turbo 4wd, they will cost you.

Here's mine, can't bear to part with it, I love it bought me scoob a few months ago and was gonna sell the nissan?
It's running 1 bar, ap clutch, scorpion exh, adjustable susp etc, it's really fast, I've had three of these cars but this is well sorted and the strongest and fastest one I've had and been in.
Get the right one and they are superb

I know it's greed I got a loan for the scoob and was gonna pay it off by selling th gti-r
They compare like this:
Scoob handles better
Scoob is faster in standard form
Scoob has better seats
Scoob ride is much better even with -45mm lowering springs and 18" wheels
Scoob sounds better, but gtir still sounds superb when giving it some, the throttle bodies scream
But
Nissan is faster running 1 bar than scoob running 1 bar
Nissans brakes are better (this suprised me, but my gtir hasn't got abs and i've got carbon kevlar pads on it)
Nissan has better lights
Nissan doesn't use any oil (scoob only uses a tiny bit but nissan is unreal)
Un decided on which looks better but they both look pretty dire standard, scoob prob better looking standard, set of wheels and lowering changes the gtir unbelievably

quote "I love it bought me scoob a few months ago and was gonna sell the nissan?"
...my brother did the opposite, he sold his old WRX to buy a GTiR, and says the GtiR is far better, but it has been highly modified (350bhp built and tuned by Norris Designs). At the end of the day its what you want. I've driven and sold many imprezas (i sell fleet cars) but prefer the R.
Yes GtiRs don't grip so well but the correct modifying can sort that out. And front mount intercoolers and 4/6 pots make a huge difference.
Great as long as you don't mind black.
The 1/4 mile times of tuners this summer will be very interesting now there is a box that can handle the big power (400+).
