Hi

"I used to go to a shop in Addlestone (Surrey) called Avonbar, very well respected in the mini tuning circles and often have project cars or tweaked cars up for sale. "

Avonbar does not exist as a garage any more (though I think they may still do mail order) their old premises in Addlestone is now a house! Not that I would have seconded that recommnendation anyway.........

MiniSpeed on the other hand are literally just down the road from there and I always got much better service from them.

Also have a Mini I must get round to selling 1400cc, JK 5 Speed, special interior etc.,.. that I really mus t get round to selling........

But seriously look in MiniWorld and speak to a few specialists like MiniSpeed (speak to James) as they may know of customers who have decent cars for sale.

Regards

Robin

Question

Now that I'm moving on to another car - my other half is making noises about a car for her.....
Looking up to a budget of £2K --> and thought a mini would be a good idea.... any ideas where I might get a half decent one from ?

Any other suggestions for a small car, reliable etc.. for this sort of money ?

Cheers,

Gastro

Thanks,

Tried this - either the cars are collectors items (hence expensive) or they are in need of major work before they are roadworthy !

Any other ideas ?

I take it you don't like your other half very much then, if you're getting her a Mini. Crap brakes and christ knows what would happen in a crash, like a side impact with an X5 for example

Red face

but then again what would happen if it was a Subaru in the same X5 scenario ? Same applies - both are made of tin foil

The car journey to work is a short one - hence the reason why I thought about the mini - perhaps FJ could suggest another vehicle that would have more 'safety' features to protect my other half .... but please dont suggest a Volvo 340

My misses used to have a Mini, i was pretty unhappy with the saftey aspects of it.
After eventually convincing her! that she needed a new car, what did she want.....a new feckin mini (I wanted a 2nd scoob in the family).
Atleast now she has a car with abs/tc and more than a rizla seperating her from the outside world

Cool

Gastro,
My son has one for sale but sadly it's £5500, but the car is a 1380cc, very fast and a very special car, if you can get the extra money let me know, the car featured in Mini magazine and is the dogs bollox.
Cheers

Gastro,

You've got a couple of options, personally I'd look in the back of Miniworld mag either in the classifieds or at the commercial ads.

I used to go to a shop in Addlestone (Surrey) called Avonbar, very well respected in the mini tuning circles and often have project cars or tweaked cars up for sale.

As for safety, I got rear ended by an articulated lorry (his fault) and put it in a ditch (my fault) and I have to say that it stood up pretty well. I wouldn't fancy a side on or a roll, but there you go, could always get a cage put in

Best of luck from an ex-1275GT owner (one of the best cars I have ever owned)

Come off it Gastro - Mini's are made of rust stuck together with UHU, plus folks want central locking, leccy windows and working heating, ABS, airbags etc these days. The Volvo 340 is probably less safe than a Mini however, due to the god awful handling, you'd never avoid anything.
Any car designed in the 90s will do, anything from small hatches up to facelift Mondeos are easily had for 2G's.

Wink

What is she used to driving?

If its her first car then you might get away with it, but if she's used to a windscreen that demists, an automatic choke, suspension etc then she'll hate you for life if you spring this on her! especially in winter!
