Looked behind the sideskirts today as I usually do a pre winter check to see if any rust needs fixing. Imagine my surprise when I could:
a/ put my finger through the sill.
b/ pull out handfuls of rusted metal.
Looks like I might be getting aquainted with the MIG welder
s'funny how a summer of driving can disintergrate a car to that extent as she was fine in may.
Anyone who wants to take the **** then kindly dont. At the end of the day she's still my pride and joy. I'll be fixing her up, even if it bankrupts me.
astraboy. till I die.

Astraboy, I would love to take the p*ss and go on about rusty old cr*ppy Vauxhalls, however my own Golf GTI was getting the once over this summer and I found a fair ammount of Corrosion behind the plastics, I was despondent.
I just stripped all the plastic off, cut out the bad metal with an angle grinder, welded some new metal in, got busy with the plastic padding (never thought I would use it again until then) and painted it, put the plastics back on and you would never know.
Trouble is for the duration of the repairs you dont know how bad its going to get or whether it will look right once done, I say sod it just go for it and if you **** it up, er get a good body and paint man on the job.

mk2s 'always' go in the sills - those trims wrap right over and under and speed up the rot, not to mention hide it away from repairing eyes - my shed which I've had for 12 years now is almost rot free... except for the sills
