Question

Every VW dealer in the country seems to have a used 4motion Golf (or 6 ! at one dealer) - not dealer demos but X and W reg ones.

Are they really that 'bad' or have people got bored with them ?

Plenty of UK cars with warranty around now at £14995 or less

Any comments from owners ?

As it happens, just sold mine today! 15k for my 1.5 year old import - happy.

The engine pulls nicely and sounds nice and raspy.
Leather Recaro's are nice.

The dullest of steering setups and chassis roll REALLY spoil the package though - it just feels so numb. Plus overly-eager throttle response in 1st is tiresome.

A good cruiser (apart from the MPG's - never more than about 26 at normal motorway speeds). Not that much fun to be had though really. Nowhere near as good as the old VR6 apparently.

I wouldn't recommend it to be honest. No particularly fond memories.

A flawed package that makes no sense.

A friend of a friend was last heard of taking the running gear out of one of these (or was it the old Golf 4x4 Country) and putting it underneath a Corrado G60. I never did hear how he got on, but it certainly sounded interesting...

We didn't get the Country model in the UK - but I've seen a couple in France - mad.

I was nearly sick when I saw the "wood" interior trim in the V6 4 Motion. Whats so special about the "Country" model Golf, does that have wood beams on the outside like old Morris Travellers?

.. no but it did have what looked like a steel beam (!) ladder chassis that the Mk2 Golf body sat on top of so it had about 8 inches of ground clearance ! Sort of an Audi Allroad before its time.

I've got one, like it, it's not a Scooby that's for sure, it's a lot more pipe and slippers

I get 30+ mpg on a motorway run, it's smooth, quiet and pulls well.

Would I buy it again, not sure, I wanted a GOlf, and I didn't like the 1.8T - so yes probably - though I rather think I'd look more at the S3/S4 next time.

I reckon they're Ok...its a bit ahrsh comparing it to a scoob..its a different type of car and it has its own appeal about it...yes the handling aint fantastic, but I dont think it's bad.Performance is strong and the brakes are very good too..........

Once again it's horses for courses, if you wanted a Scooby then you wouldn't have the 4Motion Golf/Bora in the same comparison lineup ... unless you were basing you decision purely on price bracket.

I was looking at Evos/Scoobs - but opted for the Golf as a compromise based on my lifestyle & finanncial limitations.

I would like to own a Scoob or Evo before I'm 30 though!

There's a lovely V6 bi-turbo conversion available, that puts out around 450bhp at the wheels - but I think it costs about £15k or thereabouts.

To be honest, if you want a seriously powerful car like that, spend on an S4/S3 they are better equipped to handle that kind of power (imho).
