Range Rover CAN bus faults. Any one?
Greetings,
Non Scooby related, unfortunately.
My wifes Range Rover Vogue, 4.4V8 on a 2004 plate, has recently had a bad spell with electrics/electronics.
Every now and then it throws up an error with the Transferbox and goes into a limp mode, of sorts.
It will run normal, with the only issue being it will not go into 5th or lock the TC.
With the Hawkeye diagnostic kit, I can read the ECM without issue.
The Transfer Box module, I can get the fault codes up, see the live data etc but not clear the only DTC that its thrown up, which is "CAN bus transfer Box timeout. DTC 85"
I CANNOT connect to any of the other modules in the Body or Chassis options.
I had this a month or so back, before I bought the Diagnostic kit.
RAC could not connect, Snap On diagnostics could not connect and neither could the local landrover specialist.
I had the Hawkeye on order anyway and when it arrived, I connected and could clear all faults without issue.
Second time the exact same "Transfail safe Prog" came on the Instrument Panel, I cleared it no problem myself.
This time, I have tried many times, disconnected battery and re connected but to no avail.
All fuses good. Charging voltage 14.3v, battery new.
Some times the Low range light will light come on, but its still in High.
When I turn off the ignition, along with "Trans Failsafe Prog" message and sometimes "High Range", it will also say Air Suspension Inactive" even though it has no Susp issues.
So, at the risk of going on a little too much, has anyone got any experience in Diagnostics and especially in Range Rovers and Can Bus systems?
Im getting thrown with the issue of not being able to talk to any of the modules apart from the Engine and Transfer Box, but the Transfer box is the only problem area (no 5th or TC locking)
However, if there is an issue with say the High Low selector not communicating with the Transfer box Module, perhaps this then has a knock on effect with the rest of the modules?
Or should I be looking at the Instrument panel, as its common to all the modules.
Im starting to ramble now!
If anyone has some valuable info, I would really appreciate it.
Advising that I take matches to it is not the answer Im looking for by the way!
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the world of range over. Gear box might on its way out but get the transmission fluid checked as sometimes the transmission oil cooler can leak coolant into the gearbox and give similar problems to those you have described. It will eventually kill the box.

Seriously though Two of our bosses have range rover vouges and they have been in the garage numerous times with electrical and transmission faults. In fact one went in the other day to fix the sat nav. A 40 minute software reflash turned into a 3 day stay for his vehicle.

I love Range Rovers and its where my lottery winnings would go.Despite the fact that all have ever heard from RR owners,Discovery owners are problems :-( sad really. What do Toyota know that RR don't? Wish they'd share it!

just got rid of a v8 rangerover running on lpg before the head gasket went. glutton for punishment so replaced it with 3.6 diesel rangerover sport hst. Car had 90k full history and previous owner spent over 7k in repairs last year. By my calculations 50 k miles is average life for the turbos then it's 5k to replace them if the local range rover specialist likes you. My mum and dad gave up and got a land cruiser. My td5 is rock solid though never let me down.

Ahh the RRS TDV8...I run and hide when one of these turns up on a recovery truck . I've actually said if I have to replace another TDV8 or TDV6 alternator...I'm quitting (I'd rather replace the turbos). And I wasn't joking; I'll have nothing to do with them .
Old school rangies...fine. Its just the Ford/Tata era stuff thats an ****. Same goes for Jaguars too.
