Private plate, sold car bought another

Private plate, sold car bought another
I have just sold a car with my plate on and bought another car, I have kept all paperwork.
I have filled in v5 of the purchased car and asked to keep v5 rather than they send off.
On the v317 form I have put details of car the plate is on now (sold car - my details)
On the car its going on, do I fill in details of the owner currently it is registered to or do I put my details on even tho im not yet on the v5?
I was going to send all the docs off to nearest DVLA office

Did you not think to put the plate on retention before you sold it?
Technically, that plate is his now. Has the new owner agreed to swap plates? This will cost him money, not just on getting new plates made up, but also his insurance company will charge him to change the details of the car.
If not of this has been agreed, he is well within his rights to keep the plate.

Just did the same thing and discovered the dealership I sold the car to legally owned my private plate as it was on the car at the time of purchase.
Processing is currently taking 4 weeks for a simple swap.
Dealership was ok about it but the DVLA were a nightmare as they would not recognise that I had right to my own personal plate. Took 2 months to sort and learnt the hard way to put a plate on retention before selling it.
Hope you don't have the same problems as me. At no point when speaking to the DVLA (if you have to) DO NOT MENTION the car with the plate on has been sold!!

If you phone the DVLA and say you have sold it, say its sat on your drive and still in your possession or they will say they cannot talk to you as you are not the legal owner any more.
My transfer docs got lost in their system/post and I had to call them after 4 weeks of waiting (their current back log time). I foolishly told the truth and said it was in the Dealers compound awaiting the transfer and they updated their system and said they couldn't help me and for me to speak to the new owner as they had the right to my private plate.

You need to start the transfer pre sale, not post. Putting on retention is designed for that scenario. I hear lots of stories of people losing plates this way chap- good luck with the hassle you will get doing this

The plate isn't worthless. He could sell it, or.................. Keep it as it's his legally.

Great, the resolution to all issues.
Sadly you need to agree with him now to transfer the plate as you have sold the car already, what I suggest you do is let the sale go through wait for the 6 weeks or so for the new V5's to be issued then ask him nicely to pull the plate off the car, put it on retention and put you are the nominees for the plate.
You can then put the plate on your car and all will be good.
Obviously you will need to pay the fees associated with the transfer (retention/assign to vechicle fees, possible change in insurance details for him etc) and possibly bung him a drink for assisting you in correcting your rather silly mistake.
It is fixable with a little time and though, all you need to do is think.
In about 6-8 weeks it will be on your car.

Personalised registrations are a brilliant scam by the DVLA
You 'buy' the plate, but you don't own it.
You can't transfer it quickly and easily form the car you sold to the car you bought, because, as stated above, the ***** will refuse to deal with you regarding the car you sold, because it's not yours anymore.
Instead you can put it on retention, which means basically that you pay to take your property off your property, then pay again to fit your property to your property
As with everything else government related in this country, if you attempted to run a business to the same rules the public sector operate under, you'd end up in prison, bankrupt, or both

Update.
I sent both V5s off to DVLA with new owner filled in on one.
I added a letter explaining plate change and that the car (with new owner filled in) will be sold once plate is swapped over.
All sorted.
So, no need to put on retention.
Although, by mistake they sent the new tax disc for my other car to the new owner of sold car and not got the MOT yet!
And the car I bought went back, mileage discrepancies!

True, always better to ask those whose job it is. I was okay though in the end, just putting that note in would have made it clear.
I wasn't (and never am) sure if I wanted to sell the car, why I left the plate on.
I only advertised it locally and got someone straight away.
