Default Internet monitoring

So, more headlines have come out about gchq, prism and other intellegence services monitoring what we do on the net.

Bearing in mind they are trying to detect terrorist actions, not monitor your **** stash lol

what do folks think about it?

Unless you're already on some kind of 'watch list' I don't see how you'd have anything to worry about, as I can't even begin to comprehend how much computer and man power would be required to monitor what everybody does on the net.

from what i read they tend to use keywords (jonc hit the full list so CIA are on the way to give him some friendly questioning with pliers,,,,, lol), or specific recognised names.

how true that is i dont know.

It's a lot more complex than that. Let's face it if you were a terrorist you just might have the staggeringly brilliant idea to use a code when communicating across the web.....

If you are concerned you can use TOR for internet traffic (it is encrypted, and your IP faked) although it has some quite unsavoury stuff. You can also use PGP encrypted emails. It is an offence (held without trial etc..) to not hand over your key for PGP if requested and as they use deep packet inspection in some instances, sending encrypted emails is a GREAT way to bring attention to yourself as opposed to just a simple cypher that will probably go unnoticed.

TOR is an interesting glimpse into a murky world: One where the anonymity means that child ****, drug selling and other things are unrestricted and I'm not sure that really is a good thing ....

If you download the readily available Tor Browser Bundle you're unlikely to stumble upon anything unsavory unless you specifically go looking for it, its just regular internet access routed through the Tor network and so kept 'off the grid' so to speak.

Tor does make the sharing of illegal things less traceable, which I agree isn't a good thing, but you make it sound like installing it is like opening the hellmouth!

Oh, sorry. That isn't what I meant. I meant that it allows people to do things if they wish that perhaps they would think twice about if it wasn't truly anonymous.

Looking for onion sites as you do when you install TOR (or at least I did anyway!) meant that I did stumble upon things I wasn't expecting.

People often say, I've done nothing wrong so I've got nothing to worry about but if a man in a suit turned up at your house and demanded to look at your emails, texts, phone calls, I'm assuming you would welcome him in with open arms, a cuppa tea and some hob ****?!
