Comissioning work and then vanishing before paying up
Was having a chat with a carpenter mate of mine last night. Short version is he did a load of work for someone, it was someone he knew and trusted and they agreed before hand that he would get paid for materials up front and then pay rest off in installments (for those who don't know most costs in carpentry to a high level and complexity is labour).
So he finished all the bits that were being done in his workshop ready to be finished off in situe and tried to get in contact with the guy to arrange getting them done (was to his canal boat). But to no avail, no contact via phone or email. He went down to where the boat was parked and it was there but no sign of him.
The saga continued for a couple of months untill he finaly caught up with him and sorted out the current part of the bill and arragne payment and finishing off the ret of the job. There wasn't any mallice in the guy deliberatly avoiding speaking to him, but that wasnt realy the point.
Why is it people do things liek comission work then vanish of the face of the earth. I couldn't imagine doing that, would eat at me, also could put a company in trouble if the amout gets enough and peopel dont pay.
Whats peoples thoughts on this?

Take more money up front.
Especially boat people lol,if they leave Harbour for foreign
Not such an issue on a canal barge of course
All you need do is slap a writ on it and the owner can go nowhere, not even allowed aboard

I get the packing up your boat thing lol, but its the fact that its just abusing the trust of the person you agreed something with. He trusted them at there word yet seems to have held little weight.
As said it doesn't appear to have been malliciously done and all got sorted in the end, just simply lack of thought about it and the impact it could have.

lets not forget the builder workers out there that rip people off silly.over charge, leave before work completes with the money..
there are loads of these..
now there are honest workers too..but allot harder to find and trust due to the idiots out there..
its just the way the world is
as a builder or someone getting work done - its up to them to come to an agreement and only they can measure what the outcome is likley to be,,i mean handing over all the money before the works is complete is silly - and no money at all is wrong...
