I shall comment, as I've had it done 4 times on the same ******* tooth.
Its not terribly nice, infact on the 4th occasion, I told my dentist that I wanted sedation!
You need to make the choice yourself, keep the tooth, or have a gap.
I think I would always try to keep it, even knowing what I do now

They always try and keep the tooth. I have pretty good teeth; only have one filling and it required a root canal because I feel off my bike and smashed the side of the tooth off. Currently they have had three goes at the canal procedure and I’ve had to have two lots of anti-biotics due to infection but I've still been left with an "angry tooth". Given the above experience and the tooth is so far back have it out and slam some gold in there

i have just had root canal done on 2 of my back teeth , it wasnt as bad as i had read in the forums of people wanting to commit suicide because of the pain , the dentist said it was so bad she would rather pull them out but i decided to get it done , it took 3 sessions 1. to clean out the recess and gums 2. to drill the holes and file out the cavities 3. to insert the wires and fill the tooth etc , the pain was no more than a dull tooth ache , i just took nurofen (and a few stellas lol ) and was able to eat normally after about 3 days
i got it done through the NHS and it only cost me £100 for the work and £70 for the night guard thing (gumshield) . it does feel abit odd now as the tooth is slightly a different shape untill it wears down to the bite area but im glad i didnt have them removed

If it was a front tooth I'd go root canal, one of the back "grinders" whip the ****** out, only £30! Just watch it when you're eating doritos, the ends don't half jab at the raw gum!

Had one done years ago. Root canal and crown
Sore at the time, bit of pain afterwards. Its never the same as a healthy tooth though and eventually I had it removed which I probably should have done in the first place. Don't miss it, and if I did, I'd get a bridge or an implant.

How timely !
I am off for mine to be removed at 5.40, dentist offered both and said that as an NHS dentists they dont have the same microscopes that specialists have and it may not help.
I have decided to get it removed, it pains me to have another tooth removed but it really hurt last week and it is still sore above the tooth so I think that is potentially an abcess.
The other one I had removed is directly beneath the one that is going today, I don't mind having the gap and I am sick of this current tooth being filled and messed about with, its knackered and has given me some horrendous pain on and off, tooth pain is the worst pain I have ever experienced, gnawing, relentless and hard to shake so out it comes.
I have always looked after my teeth but when younger I went without a dentist, I lost a filling and ignored it, the dentist I did get messed me about on three separate occasions and I didn't get another one so I just left it, it is easy to ignore when not in pain but it comes swiftly into focus when you have toothache.
My current NHS one is brilliant, the previous two private ones I was not all that impressed with, you get a dose of reality with NHS where private ones seem to like to save the tooth, partly I guess for you but also I think its an income stream, this one has had £700 spent on it, £30 to get shut, will be sore for a couple of weeks but I will be at the dentists every six months to really look after the rest which are apparently fine.
not looking forward to having it removed, the last one really didnt want to leave and the dentist had to get a more muscular male colleague to remove the last bit.

I had Root Canal, the dentist snapped a file off in my tooth and said nothing. Many years later I had to pay for a really expensive dentist to remove the drill, then a crown. This lasted a few years before having it pulled. It makes me wince thinking of the money I paid.

My mum had her one rear molar removed after it cracked and became infected.
Dentist fooked up and left the one root in!...worse still he didn't tell her! It was only when his practice collegue saw her for another suspected cracked tooth (osteoporosis )he noticed it on the X-ray. It'll now need drilling anyway.
His opinion was it should have had the root canal drilled and not whole tooth removed.
So all in all, judging by the above posts, they can **** up either way.
Sorry....doesn't help much whilst in the waiting room

Second time was private dentist fixing up hospital work.
Time 3 was because some discomfort developed in the future, same for time 4
Thankfully time 4 seems to have worked and there has been no more issues.
Good luck

Will take a while to settle down, I have a bit of pain, feels like it will get worse before it gets better, came out easier than the other one, big ****** it was, dentists asked if I wanted but the assistant said I couldn't as it had filling in it, been carrying it round like that for years !
On the positive side, must have lost a little bit of weight D:

I know it`s a bit late but my first time took 90 mins, worst experience and pain in my life. Only had it done a second time on a different tooth as I had one missing opposite it and I have that on the opposite of my mouth and it`s a b1tch eating that side.

Mine is quite tolerable now, ibuprofen helped, as did my youngest going to bed as though I love him dearly he was prattling on in my ear and was doing my head in, doesn't feel too bad, manged to eat a jam butty and a glass of milk.

Too late, but I'd have said keep it. Root canal sounds more scary than it is. I've had it done on 4 teeth due to abscess problems, and each time I've fallen asleep in the chair while the dentist worked. It's never hurt and the relief is instantaneous. I've even had it done on one tooth with strange-shaped roots that took a bit of digging around to remove all the nerves, but its never - ever - hurt. Cost an arm & leg though. Next time I'd say opt for the root canal and keep the tooth.
