you generally get what you pay for with mountain bikes, itll be ok on the road but off road it wont be great because it will be quite heavy due to being made of steel and the gear set wont be very good quality.
maybe pay a bit more and get better gear set and possibly disc brakes.
depends on how much your going to use it to justify the expense really.
i do a fair bit of mountain biking and usually buy specialized but they are not cheap.

hmm, i really don't like gripshift gear shifters and the rest of the components will be pretty cheap, crap seals in the forks and stuff. Spending 300 would improve everything quite considerably-- you get a pretty big bang for your buck in terms of tangible improvements in quality and performance that even a total beginner would appreciate going from £150 to £700 or so. Especially if you would like to take it off road.
Having said that my pub bike is an old WRECK but it still beats the heck out of walking, did a couple of longer runs on it too 50 miles (all on road mind)
I would avoid fullsuspension too unless you want to spend some good money on something that is well made with good shock and good quality frame like Tubbytommies Specialized :-)

Like some one said, you only get what you pay for.................
If its no good, heavy and gears and brakes are crap you will end up not using it. But if its just transport for short journeys then you might find this OK.
