I remember this very well, I was on exercise in Belgium at the time, some of our radio kit was based at Zeebrugge, only due to a leave ban did several people I knew, did not board that ferry, I was on the receiving end of the flash message saying the ferry had sunk, very scary!

I was on the sister ship 'spirit of free enterprise' at the same time, as part of a rugby tour to Paris and will never forget the panic it caused the teams families back home, whilst we were unaware of what was unfolding.

We used to go skiing years ago and used to drive down from Newcastle to Felixstowe and get the ferry across to Zeebrugge and then across to switzerland. The Ferry we used to get was the Herald of Free Enterprise.

The Pride and the Spirit are still running. They were promptly renamed, as was TT and theyre now renamed again and chugging away in places hwere ferries make you nervous anyway.
It was negligence, but ferries are different now as a result.

I remember it well. I was pretty young when it happened and it had quite an effect on me at the time.
I still have the record that was produced at the time somewhere.

Remember getting the lifeboats in at work to refurb and sell on,
We stripped all the nameplates & refurbed the interiors prior to sending on to
new owners. Seemed strange at the time, given the circumstances

I was only 11 at the time and I rememer it well but when I did my apprenticeship I was talking to one of the service engineers and he was on there! He was supposed to have been on the ferry before that IIRC but missed it so he ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. He reflected back on it and remembered people clambering over each other to get out but from the faces he saw he doesn't know who lived and who didn't
RIP to all the families involved.
