Went there about 3 years ago, brought back some new bug even my doc didn't know about.

Best avoid most food and water.

Nice place to go is on one of the tours they hold, it took you to some of the places used in Jurassic park, ended up by a waterfall also in the film, all very picturesque (Unsure of exactly where it was)

I am off to the north coast in Sept, looking forward to it alot.

With a bit of luck it wont be too hot then

Dont know anything about it though, apparently the north is the better place to go, whereas the south has the better beaches.

Went there about 5 years ago for our honeymoon. Stayed at the "Fiesta Bavaro" in Bavaro/Punta Cana (East Cost). Went with Thomson on a two week all inclusive. Found some details here on the resort.

Excellent place. Freindy people, hot weather, lots to do at the resort. We went out on a couple of trips but mainly stayed in the resort. Food was good as they had about 5 resturants to choose from.

went to the South coast about 5 years back. The North was already getting quite commercialised, the South not so much.

Bonus of the South is you get to swim in the Carribean instead of the Atlantic!

Had a great time, no nasty bugs, but I stuck to drinking things that were either canned, bottled or high enough abv to kill bugs!

Went on an all inclusive deal and it was great value.

Cool

Tell him to get out his Bargepole!

It's a place the British didn't want from the Spanish when they had the chance.

Latest addition for the fashionably ignorant who can't decide for themselves.

See also The Gambia (aka the Fever Coast), Phuket (says it all), Goa, Bali, Jamaica, Cuba and Safaris in Kenya.

Ask anyone who's ever been in the navy (merchant or Royal) or who served overseas in some capacity. Lovely spots for visitors.

Ha ha ha.

went there a few years back, nice place, people are friendly and it was very cheap.

The downside is dodgy guts are pretty much guarenteed

Went to the Dom Rep,3yrs ago and got married there.DO NOT GO,THE PLACE IS CURSED!!!!!
Actually,we had a fantastic time,we stayed in sosua(north)unfortunately the south had been devastated by a hurricane a few months before we got there, something to be aware of at this time of year, but the temperature is pretty much the same throughout the year.
Playa Grande is a 4 star hotel, about 1 hours drive from puerto plata airport, this hotel is stunning especially if you like golf.
Whale watching is a must.On excursions it is best to go with the tour operator(thomson was ours)this way you avoid the stomach bugs, as the drink, food etc is all served fresh, also drink bottled water and use bottled for cleaning teeth, but then most travel agents can supply this info and more.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Dean

Just came back 3 weeks ago. You could drink the water at the hotel we stayed at and use their ice. They filtered it as it came into the hotel (Tour operators will advise). The service and people were very nice. The worst thing actually was the mosquitoes which would try their hardest to bite you at dusk. Generally I thought it was a good holiday (although I would fing the all inclusive holiday boring if going for more thqn a week).

We went there a couple of years ago and stayed in resort called Playa Dorada, Was very touristy enclosed resort but very pleasant. The scary thing was that on the gates to the resort was an armed guard and they recommended if you wished to leave the resort you took one with you.

We also got the squits.

However the beach was fantastic and the snorkelling amazing.
