Becoming an Extra
How do you become an “EXTRA” in films/TV/Adverts ?
Can you make any money from it ?
Any body on here doing or done any work as an Extra ?
Or all Extras just unsuccessful actors ?
Can you be an “professional” extra ?

My son's g/f works as an extra part time. Have seen her in a few things, even had the occasional line . Not particularly well paid if it's all you do, but yes, you have to go through a good agency and it can be difficult getting into one.

I have been an extra in a movie (The Rachel Papers). Back in 1988/89 I got paid Ł50 to sit around on my bike in Rathbone Place for a morning, eating smoked salmon sandwiches and reading papers. Whilst this was happening, people were filming around us. One of us was asked to stay on for the day so got another Ł25 to follow a film truck round Soho on my bike & overtake Dexter on his moped. I spent a further Sunday doing sweet FA in Battersea Park for a further Ł100 & Ł50 for pulling up and delivering a parcel to a house another morning in Holland Park.
It all ended up on the cutting floor
At the time, the rate was pretty good as a day rate, better than couriering but as shown, a lot of time doing nothing and ended up getting cut anyway!

I have done it before. It's not all it's cracked up to be really, and nobody I know has done it long term.
The odd few people I studied with did it as a way to try and get their foot in the door, but it meant traveing to Manchester or London so they soon gave up.
On this note, my Theatre Studies lecturer is an extra on Corrie sometime soon

My friends Dad has done a couple of things, Sense and Sensibility springs to mind, I recall he was paid Ł50 for the day and he had to stand around all day. Easy money but sounds pretty dull tbh

My Mum has done a lot of this stuff, been in various films, TV shows and adverts. She does it as she has plenty of time on her hands (she's retired), gets her out the house and is a bit of pocket money as the pay isn't that great.
She says there's loads of sitting around, but the production companies normally put on decent food so it takes some of the bordom away

One of the Ladies at my daughters livery yard, starred in one of the Catherine Cookson movies. They needed someone to gallop their horse over the fells. No idea how she got picked or anything, but she really enjoyed it and has not told a soul how much she got
