Any Sales People on here need help with Sales Targets
I have been with my company now for 4 years and have grown my area every year and feel my current sales target is taking the pee.
My Area took the following over the years.
2007 £346,000
2008 £412,000
2009 £575,000
My Tagert for 2010 / 2011 was £510,000 I understand it was quite low seeing I finished on 575,000 but I did'nt want to say anything as I needed a incentive to earn money. Half way through the year when I started smashing the targets they revised my budget to £776,000k and I finished the year on £851,000.
This year they said I should be able to do more than that and set my target as £851,000 and it's so bloody hard to earn any commision as the country is doing so bad I can't really grow my area and would be happy to do the same again this year. As I grew it over 40% last year.
Just recently we had a sales meeting and so far this year we have lost two reps and now I am the most important one to the company as there is only me and another bloke. The company is now trading at 18% down my old sales Manager who just left was 22% down and the boss is 18% down.
I am currently 8% down and bring in the most money for the company and this why I want my targets revised and lowered as there is know incentive to earn comission and to go out and smash targets. The product I sell is also quite hard as we are seasonal and very exepensive.
I was thinking about asking my target to go down 18% or at least to last years target of £776k.
Any views would be great sorry about the spelling.

It is very unusual for targets to go down year-on-year. I understand why you would want it, but it hardly happens.
If you can last the year, then hopefully your targets for next year will be reasonable.

You've made a rod for your own back I'm afraid, fella. Advice for the future: If your target is x, do x, not x plus 50%. Your sales manager might stroke your ego and buy your missus a bottle of plonk, but he'll fit you up the year after. I learnt the hard way. Second piece of advice - don't whine about your target, if you came to me asking for it to be revised I'd tell you to foxtrot oscar, and I suspect he'll do the same. Understand you overcooked it and take your medicine.
