Which bike to go for?
I haven't had a bicycle for a good ten years now. Up until 9 months ago, mrs and I lived in flats, so didn't really have room to store them. Now I have a nice garage to chuck my gear in.
Haven't got a lot to spend (£150 max) and the bike will not be used that often, just at weekends probably for a couple of hours.
Raleigh used to be the make of bike to have when I was a nipper but most places I have looked don't seem to stock them. I don't mind buying 2nd hand either, as long as it still looks shiney.
Any particular make to go for or avoid at my price bracket?

As above.
And Raleigh is now just a brand name used by some far eastern mass cycle manufacturer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raleigh_Bikes

Unless you have to buy brand new latest model, I would suggest you go for either last year's model, or pre owned as you will get a lot more for your money.
Ebay/Gumtree is a good place to look, also a number of bike forums, just stick it in google.

Might struggle now with a last years model from Halfords, i tried to get a 2010 Boardman and they had nothing left to sell.
IIRC somebody on this forum rated the Vulcan quite well, the Kraken i looked at had some shoddy welding on it though, not sure if this was a one off or common to the Carrera bikes.

I had the red disc spec one (2008 model) and got it because the reviews were very positive, I really liked that bike. I have since sold it on to the father-in-law as I fancied moving up to the Vengeance. I still prefer the look of his but the brakes on mine.
Granted the welding is noticeable but i'm more into riding the bike than looking at it Plus a 'prettier' frame would have cost 2/3 times the price.

I have a Caerra Vulcan too, the 2007 disc spec version, it's a decent bike for weekend riding, the suspension is pretty good although with hind sight for commuting I would have gone for bike without suspension at all.
My suspension is still working fine being 4 years old.
I'd suggest you can buy a Vulcan second hand for around £100, i'd sell mine for that anyway only due to buying another bike and the wife can't understand me needing 2 bikes

My local bike shop has quite a few used bikes in stock, might be worth nipping down to yours and having a gander. At least they will have been serviced before sale.
