He needs a PS3 in his life.
If you've not been on it before, try this site. Also for overclocking I use an app called SetCPU. Some of the ROMS I use are overclocked already, but the one I'm currently on is set to my Hero's default so I have to use that app.

What does the "lagfix" do?
If its rooted, then overclock it! my little HTC Hero has been running 710mhz for the past year or so, from a stock speed of around 528mhz.
Made a lot of difference that new T-Mobile G2 Vision thing is getting overclocked to 1.4ghz by the folks on XDA

I've done it, I was being fussy and wanted it perfect.
Had to flash to 2.1 then to stock 2.2 all done now with a good quadrant score. She's said it seems more responsive already.

Battery life is the top improvement
However!! You will not see any improvements with lag on your phone
This is not an Android issue, but the way phone manufacturers implements Android on there phones...
Check out the galaxy forums for a detailed lag explanation
