Default where have a went wrong - cleaning a fishtank

Having a bit of trouble cleaning my fish tank. Cleaned the glass, removed the fake plants etc, cleaned the sand with one of them sucky things and have removed 50% of the water due to the mirkiness of it but there is still so much crap floating in the tank that I don't know how to get rid of it?

The tank has been running for approx 5weeks now and I have been doing 15% water change every week and everything seemed grand but this water change has been an absolute nightmare!

what have i done wrong?

How the hell has it got that mucky after just 5 weeks? Is it tropical or coldwater? Don't change anymore water than what you have, if I get crap floating after a good clean, I use a net and swoop around to collect floating debris.

Was sand clean went it went in? Filthy stuff if not. Smooth pebbles/gravel might be more suitable.

Fine mesh net to remove floating rubbish.

Cold water, tried the net but these are very small floating bits.

yeah, cleaned the sand before putting into the tank. I have pebbles in another tank and never had this sort of problem.

Another thing to think about if it's really that mucky, make sure your not overfeeding the fish. NO FOOD should really reach the bottom, only feed the amount they will eat before it reaches the bottom.(unless your feeding bottom feeders/catfish!)

its not a massive tank just a 64litre yoke with 2 fish in it. I'm using a Fluval U2 filter, maybe I need something a little better?

How often do you change the water? Also what fish are in there?

If you have goldfish then a 20% change every 2 weeks should be fine. If there is really that much crap in there you need to think about why?
Overfeeding and poor filtration can cause a right mess, so you need to make sure that isn't the problem.

It could be a bacterial bloom what are your water peramiters?

Did you fishless cycle before you put the fish in?

If you have goldfish then they are quite a messy fish so you will need more filtration. I'm not an expert on goldfish but I think they need a minimum of 100L per fish.

don't replace the foam filters - just rinse them a bit to get the big stuff out of them - I've only replaced my foams twice in 10 years on a 400 litre cichlid tank. Water always looks mucky after a clean - see how it is 24 hours later.

I suspect you're over-feeding. How long have you had the fish in there?

Already changed one side as i've had the filter for quite some time, just not in this tank.

The fish have only been in the tank for 5weeks, I think you may be right with the over feeding as I'm having difficulties feeding one fish who may be blind.
