Default Dog Grooming

Anyone grrom their own dogs, I dont mean a quick brush but clipping them, I do ours with scissors but could do with some clippers, I had some but they were crap, so after tips as to what to buy, he has a combination of fine downy fure, curly fur and thick crispy fur, he looks like he has been rolled in glue, then on the floor of a barbers at closing time !

Clipping him with scissors is very labour intensive and he isnt very cooperative.

I think most furry creatures have two types of hair. They have the furry undercoat and the coarser wiry outer coat which is composed of "guard hairs".

It must be a bit of a game trying to groom him J4CKO. I suppose you need to find a really good set of clippers somewhere. I don't know if there are any rules for the dog's safety when you do clip his coat. Maybe some expert can enlighten us.

Mrs Leslie does a good job on my hair, but a dog would be a step too far I think!

We have always "self groomed" mainly because it got so bloody expensive for a professional wash and brush up. But our dogs were not especially hairy - mostly Cavaliers - but you soon get the hang of it. But never look as good as the pro job IMHO. Learn how to clip nails properly so they don't bleed and give gums a good scrub.

We found a Hinds (spelling?) brush invaluable.

I was once in the vets and a miserable looking chap was there with a miserable looking dog which I think was an Irish Water Spaniel. Hair all over the place and I think they shed their own coat. All over the house, all through the summer, so this bloke was saying

I am lucky enough to have two short haired dogs (boxers) so no more than a quick brush for mine.
As for their nails I have NEVER had to clip them and my dogs are 4.5 and 6.5 if they are walked enough they won't need doing as concrete is a great nail file for dogs!

We tried mowing our springer not long after we got her, but found it to be too much like hard work. Trying to keep 20+ kilos of unhappy dog from chewing your arm of is not my idea of fun

Now she goes to a professional near Manchester Airport twice a year, and looks good/smells for about as long as it takes her to find a sh!tty pond to swim in

A good old Furminator is all we really use, as well as other brushes. And some nail clippers (dog ones lol)

We "hoover" our dog. He loves it, honest
Gets rid of all the raggy hair, easy peasy to then give him a quick trim with the scissors

Our old Labrador was just the same. He used to almost pick up the hoover and bring it to you at times!
