Default Does a window support the wall?

May sound like a stupid question but........

If you have a window in one of your external walls, is there any reason why you can't take it out along with any brickwork below and create an opening that stretches from the floor to where the top of window used to be. The window itself and the brickwork below it don't povide any support do they? So no extra steel/lintels etc should be needed?

Thanks

It should be fine, but I'd make double sure there is a lintel above the window first!

as above really , the lintel should be in place to support and spread the load of the bricks, etc above the window.

My sister came home from work & noticed that her Polish builders had demolished a loadbearing wall & were holding it up with a long handled brush balanced on a crate
