There was a couple of seriously good bikes in the for sale last week - at very good prices, may be worth a look back !

Nick,
I live in Hants, so I don't know any Essex shops specifically, although I seem to remember there used to be a good one in Brentwood - they used to sponsor a lot of the races we did over that way.

As for clubs, try www.bcf.uk.com, or alternatively, some of the mountain bike mags have good club contact sections. Choose a club based on what type of riding you want to do ie trekking, racing, etc...

happy cycling and remember, if you want to get seriously 'race-fit', there's no substitute for miles, miles and more miles..

cheers

... oh and do some more miles.

With that budget the world is your oyster. But do remember if you get into it in a big way, you need some cash for clothing/shoes/hydration gear etc.

Take a look at Scott, Kona, Specialized etc. for bikes. You will first need to decide what type of bike you want though.

Cheers

Have you bought copies of the latest Bike Mags - e.g. Mountain Bike UK, etc? There are normally some good buys in there - particularly if you are prepared to go for a superceeded model. If you're just getting into biking HALF your budget would buy an excellent bike. I've got a Kona Caldera and a Specialised FSR - very happy with both.

Cheers,

Ian.

Depends on what you wanna do with your bike.
I started out with a Kona MuniMula then started getting into it more and wanted all the best lightest bits, tried a Trek8900 frame (very nice) ended up eventually with a Klein Attitude Race frame, full XTR groupset, RaceFace Cranks, everything as light as possible all bought and built myself.
Problem is with Klein's the paint is so swish you don't know weather to ride the bike or hang it on the wall

Best bet is get MBUK and Mountain Bike Rider mags and have a look for last seasons deals on bikes, might not be the latest colour frames but u can save £££'s on these bikes.

I've dealt with the following for bits.
http://www.gbcycles.co.uk/eshop.asp?wci=home
http://www.singletrack.co.uk

The best "off the shelf" bikes I think are Kona's and the higher end Treks and Kleins.

I'm going to say watch buying a "Kona" at the moment... Halfords are going to be their main dealers... And I believe the group sets will be lower than normal so they can be seen to be selling them "Cheap". For that money you are talking about a good bike.
But what do you want from it. Full suspension or hardtail???
Ultra light or a bit down hill???? Do you want to buy in one go or are you prepared to upgrade each year...???

Cannondales Lefties can be had cheap at the Moment. Its a very good bike. A stumpjumper will also be good.Trek 8500 + models. Kona Kula or Pahoehoe. What about a custom made frame like a "Hinde"

What hight are you and weight??? The more you tell us the better we might be able to help.

If you are about 6.foot, I have a mate who is selling a Cannondale headshock. Its large and has Hope disks etc. It has never been thrashed. He is looking at around £750.00

I would visit "Evans" at the Cut, Waterloo, London. To get some ideas. They have 2 good stocked shops near each other to have a look around and test ride.

Be lucky and wear a good hat!!

I used to manage a bike shop in the South - stuff all your questions in an emai to me if you wish, I may be able to get you a very good deal on a Klein/Specialised/Scott or Rocky Mountain still if you wanted.

Nick

This Cannondale I have mentioned would be perfect for your size. It will have "Hope hubs and 4.pots brakes" ( but no gold wheels!!)

top spec, grip shifts etc. Its Black and is in perfect condition. The Headshock has been serviced and locks out for faster road work etc.

I have been into mountain bikeing for several years, I would recommend you search your local shops, or being near london the Evans chain of shops. You should be able to pick up last years model (2001) with a large discount. I would expect a £2000 bike for your £1500. Dont foget to budget for a helmet, clothes & shoes and evan some maintenance bits. Haggle and you may get some of this throne in. Shops dont want this stock hanging around any longer than needed, so push for a good deal.
