A/V tip for today
You've spent a ton of money on a nice tv, a/v amplifier and speakers.
Switch off Dynamic Range Control in the audio parameters on your amp and PS3.
your blu-rays sound better and you get less "stop messing with the tv" comments from your other half too because you're convinced something's wrong.
Page fifty ****ing seven in the manaul: DRC - switch this on to completely monkey with the sound of your £15 blu-ray.
<rant />
thanks for listening
and, just to stay on form, when can we order iphone4 through O2 then? eh?

Ahh, like so many "features" on AV amps and TVs, most just make it worse in a attempt to mask the inferiorities of using tiny satelite speakers or the built in speakers on a TV.
SRS WOW=OFF
SRS TruBass=OFF
Dynamic Bass =OFF
Virtual Surround=OFF
Dolby 3D=OFF (or Virtual Dolby)
Auto Volume=OFF (OK for loud adverts, but really messes it up for films and music)
Night Mode = OFF (still not worked out what it does)
Obviously, this assume that a) the speakers used are actually of a size capeable of producing a wide frequenceny range, and b) the amp has a decent graphic equalizer. Without both, you're screwed; may as wear earmuffs.
IMHO, of course

it's probably moot on your system then
night mode only works on the .1 channel where bass gets routed to when your speakers are set to 'small' - which mine are.
yours are 'large' so the full frequency range is sent to them and I guess night mode doesn't bother to restrict low frequency on every other channel.
this stuff should be easier to set up, sheesh - i just wanna watch the damn film lol

there are some really well encoded DVDs, like Firefly, that look good upscaled to HD and there are some appallingly coded/transferred blu rays you wish you'd just bought the DVD.
if you don't calibrate your tv though, i guess it doesn't really matter lol
My dad has the sharpness so way up that everyone moving on the screen has a little ghost running after them lol. Makes feature films, like Gladiator, look like an episode of Eastenders

Some of the older Samsung Plasmas (mine included) have/had some kind of gay dynamic contrast thingybob that was utterly horrible, causing dark scenes to get "boosted" in murky black crap, while at the same time flicking on the screen, this flicker was noticiable, and could happen once or mutiple times, depending on the scene, and the TVs inability to decide if it was going to be switched on or not
I had to actually go into the service menu and disable it with a hex code type edit, as the customer is not allowed to disable it from the usual menus, god only knows why?
I assume they have tweaked/removed the feature now, as it was utterly gash.

We leave this on, as you say, great for adverts, any decent film we will be watching through the X360 anyway, which is hooked up to the separate surround sound system, so the TV setting makes no difference

If it's a half decent Onkyo amp then it might have auto set-up. Just wire up the speakers, select auto set-up in the menu and listen to all the silly whoop-whoop noises whilst it sets speaker size, placement, polarity, distance and graphic equaliser settings. Then pop a DVD/BD in and enjoy.

On my Pioneer Reciever this is called Midnight Mode and is very effective as it makes the difference between the quietest and loudest sounds in a movie narrower, so you can have it at lower volume whilst still hearing vocals without having the house rattle appart when there is an explosion.

I use a Mordaunt Short Sound pressure meter and test disc to get it right then screw about with it until i get the sound *I* like. Auto setups are pretty crap.

If i'm being honest, I wouldn't miss it if i didn't have it but its looks good if i'm flashing stuff around like this whilst setting up someones home cinema system.
